iTunes Review

After a debut album and follow-up EP culled from primitive home demos, Banhart was sent into a proper recording studio for his second album. The added clarity alters the experience. What used to be a ghostly warble is now an idiosyncratic folk attack where the clean, straight lines are detoured by Banhart’s need to bend and break the tradition with his own dream-like ambitions. “This Is the Way” begins things with his calm finger-picking supporting his unusual voice with a most traditional framework. If someone said the recording came from an old collection of lost folk recordings it would be far more believable than telling someone that Banhart exists here in the early to mid-‘00s. The title-track features cult folksinger Vashti Bunyan. “Will Is My Friend” features some tinkering piano and gentle drums and is almost a straight ballad. “When the Sun Shone On Vetiver” is a sly, spooky blues shout-out to his friend and collaborator Andy Cabic of the band Vetiver. Banhart continues to find new ways to explore an old genre.

Soothing and Wild

Whenever I listen to this album, I feel as though I'm laying in the woods, with soft, mystical songs floating all around me. Banhart's albm evokes more feeling in me than any other bit of music I've ever listened to. It really calms me down with it's rambling acoustics and Banhart's wavering and strange vocals, and this is one of the few that can, if not the only one. I highly reccomend this for any fans of acoustic songs or folk, I guarantee this will change your musical perception.

Growing up in Caracas, Venezuela, and Los Angeles, Devendra Banhart was always playing music and drawing. But it wasn't until his brief stay at the San Francisco Art Institute that the disciplines became his constant companions. With the encouragement of poet and SFAI professor Bill Berskon, Banhart began experimenting with all kinds of art. He also began recording songs around that same time, usually on shoddy, hand-me-down four-track machines. Brief, half-finished, or written in stream-of-consciousness...
