iTunes Review
A pseudo uber-group of indie musicians from a spectrum of genres, Gayngs sounds like an art-school loft party at four a.m., DJ’d by trip-hoppers who forgot to caffeinate for an all-nighter. Conceived by two members of glossy synth-pop outfit Solid Gold and musician/producer Ryan Olson (all from Minneapolis), Relayted was inspired by the song “I’m Not in Love” by ‘70s lite-rockers 10cc, and each track was recorded at 68 bpm (though the breezy, glistening “Faded High” sounds suspiciously lively). The recording project grew to include members of North Carolina’s Rosebuds and Megafaun, Justin Vernon and Mike Noyce of Bon Iver, and a slew of vocalists and musicians from the Minneapolis music scene, including rapper P.O.S. and Doomtree MC Dessa. If this sounds a bit too gimmicky, forget everything you just read: this is a fantastically textured, casually sexy and meticulously crafted set of music, rife with surprises. Relayted, like the gorgeous self-titled Broken Bells’ debut, serves as an outstanding example of genre-busting, outside-the-lines creative thinking.

Mysterious Genius
This album is incredible start to finish. It has a refreshing sound while using recognizable elements within its framework. It's a collection of diversity yet continuity, possibly because it comes from the influences of so many different artists. The trippy song transitions and the mellow 69 beats/min that drive every song really make it hard to stop listening to this album without finishing its last note. Consider it a clash between Bon Iver and Solid Gold with the mixed force of something mysterious and eerie.
Minneapolis Gem!
A true Minneapolis gem! It presents numerous minnesota and midwest artists in a collective similar to the power of Broken Social Scene or Wu-tang. Although, Gayngs sounds little like either, it utilizes the variety of artists to create a cohesive and airy musical masterpiece. Like an album created in the 1970s, its not about the single as much as it is about the musical journey Gayngs takes you on. It reminded me at times like Dark Side or Kid A...
Relayted has a thread throughout that sews the sound from each track into a tapestry of genres and down tempo melodies. Its production is incredible and seems to be purposeful and whole-heartedly apart of every tune. Ryan Olson alongside Solid Gold’s Zack Coulter and Adam Hurlburt have created a nice piece of work that I believe resinates with the times, but doesn't stray to the pop mainstream. Most songs lack a chorus, hook, or repetitive form and they are still intense enough to be memorable and effectual.
The artists on the track are often utilized against type-cast. POS singing. Dessa background vocals. Well, i guess that's where the type-cast ends, but it's better than I first thought when I heard this was the case. Browny points for the Andre 3000 move by POS and Dessa's vocals have always been great. I just expected a verse from one of them and was happily surprised that the vision of the album wasn't scrapped to fit two great artists.
If you buy just one track you're stupid. It's lost if it's alone, but I know how people are with their mixtapes and mp3 players. No patience for an album..
