iTunes Review
Eric Gales was a blues guitar prodigy, winning his first contest at age 11 and releasing his first album at age 16. The Hendrix comparisons were obligatory; he added enough overdrive and psychedelic twists to earn nods towards the legend. But while one can hear the ghosts of Hendrix in the down-and-dirty guitar grinds of “Block the Sun” and “The Liar,” Gales has clearly found his own voice. This album is, quite simply, explosive. He can take a shuffle and turn it inside out (“The Finest Club In Town”) or bring back the early ‘70s with a heavy, slow blues (“When You’ve Got No Place to Go”). His singing is limited but pure and the band pushes him to be in top form. The extra funk of “If You Knew The Truth” is an ensemble gem, each part working towards a satisfying full-band attack. The eight minutes plus of “On the Wings of Rock and Roll” is a guitar player’s dream, with the multi-layered “Universal Peacepipe” ending things on an elaborate, sustained note.

Most unheralded blues guitarist today
This guy just keeps getting better. Hopefully he can put his demons to rest and focus on writing and playing. The guy is like Eric Johnson, Jimi Hendrix and Albert King rolled into one. If you like great grooves, soulful vocals and long but innovative (not generic) blues solos, check this guy out. You can start with this album and work your way backwards through his catalog. The highest compliment I can pay to a guitarist is that I can recognize his playing from just a few notes. Eric is one of those guys with a style all his own and the chops to match. A great album by a stellar musician/guitarist.
Great, but why is it $11.99??
This is the first time I've seen an iTunes single album with a price greater than $9.99. What are they thinking? CD's are sometimes the same price (sometimes even cheaper) as iTunes albums, which are compressed so that you don't get full CD sound quality. Since I usually end up dumping all my CD's onto my ipod anyway, I have bought plenty of iTunes albums since USUALLY they are cheaper than the CD version, particularly when it's a brand new release. However, $11.99 is just too much of a ripoff. I'll spend two more bucks and get the full CD version elsewhere, thank you. Apple is just getting too greedy (or someone else in the market chain is, forcing them to up the price). REDUCE THE PRICE!
yes!
The best yet from E.G. This guy gets better and better.....
