iTunes Review

For the Texas band’s second album, they achieve a warmer studio sound that begins at the piano for the relatively straightforward “Creep In the Cellar” that nicks the chord progression to the Kinks’ “All Day and All of the Night” and throws a chaotic violin on top until it’s time to check out. And that’s how the Butthole Surfers succeed in being one of the ‘80s most enduring bands: they understood the importance of creating wild new textures within familiar frameworks. The cover of the Guess Who’s “American Woman” is among the band’s most inspired, making other versions sound redundant. “Sea Ferring” delivers Paul Leary’s psychedelic guitar to crunch along with singer Gibby Haynes’ stream-of-consciousness craziness. But it’s “Perry” that connects on all levels, as the organ shifts in a psychedelic twist and Haynes howls in desperation. This edition of the album includes the previous Cream Corn From the Socket of Davis EP,  arguably the band’s most concise and effective statement, containing the absolutely crazy and inspired “Moving to Florida.”

I think my brain has melted.

This is a bizarre, creepy, surreal trip to hell. Mixes classic psychedelic rock with industrial sludge rock. Its hard to describe the BHS accurately they cross and mix up so much, its almost schitzophrenic. Check out the version of American Women, I love how the music melts at the end. Ahhhh, to be 21 again and on the verge of a nervous breakdown or religous epiphany or something else trivial.

not their best but fun

Sickner! These guys must be brilliant because no idiot could ever accidentally put sounds like those of Rembrandt Pussyhorse on tape. Just listen to it a few times.

Arguably the most infamously named band in the annals of popular music — for years, radio found their moniker unspeakable, and the press deemed it unprintable — Butthole Surfers long reigned among the most twisted and depraved acts ever to bubble up from the American underground. Masters of calculated outrage, the group fused the sicko antics of shock rock with a distinct and chaotic mishmash of avant-garde, hardcore, and Texas psychedelia; sleazy, confrontational, and spiteful, songs...
