iTunes Review

As one of the premier popular music stylists of the 20th century (and now the 21st), Willie Nelson enjoys himself here as he revisits his favorite songs. His roots are obviously country music, and he knows his way around the contours of the music’s soul like no one else. His relaxed delivery creates an interesting friction for the quicker tunes, such as the George Jones hit “Why Baby Why,” Hank Snow’s “I’m Movin’ On,” and Hank Williams’ “Roly Poly.” He beautifully crafts Webb Pierce’s “Slowly” into something for the modern era. (The bonus track here is a spirited take on Pierce’s “More and More,” also covered with conviction by Van Morrison on his Pay the Devil release.) Timeless tunes such as Porter Wagoner’s “Satisfied Mind,” Ray Price’s “Release Me,” and his buddy Kris Kristofferson’s “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down” show no signs of age in either their sentiments or in Nelson’s delivery. (We all should sound so strong and alive at age 78.) There’s not a false note here.

Excellent!

Another great album that will never see the light of day on country radio, but one that is well-worth a listen and purchase. Willie adds his distinctive touch to some old classics without turning them into a sideshow.

Aahhh, another fine one from the master

God's sake alive, is there anyone out there that works as hard as Willie when it comes to music? I can't imagine who. This is right up there with Stardust, Willie Sings Cindy Walker, Last of the Breed, Shotgun Willie, Tales Outta Luck, Red Headed Stranger, Country Music (if it didn't have that muddy T Bone Burnette production on it), . . . not to mention a few dozen Willie originals like: Crazy, Hello Walls, Funny How Time Slips Away, Night Life, Family Bible, etc. Thanks for making this one clean, lively, balanced and unique. It's like a good book, taking you everywhere--right up to the end. In other words, it doesn't get old after several plays.

Willie, someday, when you do move on, you'll be the one leading us all in song on your way out; you'l be laughing while we cry; let's hope that's still down the road a bit. So, be safe out there on the highways, Willie. And keep playing for all you're worth, cause there is still plenty of gas left in the tank.

C'mon iTunes

This isn't a retread recording from 1995, it's newly recorded classic country by Willie produced by another country legend; James Stroud on his relatively new label, R&J Records. Willie puts his signature on 15 country songs written by others (none of his own tunes) and even though he's recorded several of them before, each sounds remarkably fresh with Willie's signature phrasing. Willie puts the O back in country!

As a songwriter and a performer, Willie Nelson played a vital role in post-rock & roll country music. Although he didn't become a star until the mid-'70s, Nelson spent the '60s writing songs that became hits for stars like Ray Price ("Night Life"), Patsy Cline ("Crazy"), Faron Young ("Hello Walls"), and Billy Walker ("Funny How Time Slips Away") as well as releasing a series of records on Liberty and RCA that earned him a small, but devoted, cult following. During the early '70s, Willie aligned...
