Album Review
When an album boasts Robben Ford on lead vocals and guitar and Jimmy Haslip on electric bass, one tends to assume that there will be some type of jazz influence. Haslip, after all, was a founding member of the Yellowjackets back in 1981 and was still with the group 29 years later in early 2010, while the eclectic Ford has a long history of excelling as both a blues-rocker and a jazzman. It turns out that jazz is, in fact, an influence on parts of Renegade Creation, which unites Haslip and Ford with Michael Landau (lead vocals, guitar) and Gary Novak (drums). Jazz isn't a huge influence on this 2010 release, but it is an influence. More than anything, however, Renegade Creation is an album of blues-rock and decidedly bluesy hard rock. The most overtly jazz-minded tracks on Renegade Creation are "Peace" (a Ford composition that shouldn't be confused with the Horace Silver standard) and Novak's "Brothers," both of which are instrumentals that fall into the jazz fusion category. But instrumentals are the exception rather than the rule on this 51-minute CD, which finds Landau singing lead on four tracks ("What's Up," "Destiny Over Me," "Where the Wind Blows," and the title song) and Ford singing lead on four tracks ("Soft in Black Jeans," "Darkness," "God and Rock ‘n Roll," and "Who Do You Think You Are"). And even though the blues-rock and hard rock vocal offerings that dominate Renegade Creation don't necessarily adhere to a traditional 12-bar blues format, the feeling of the blues is always present throughout the album. Although not created with blues purists in mind, Renegade Creation is a solid outing that will appeal to blues-rock and hard rock enthusiasts — especially if they like having a little fusion on the side.

1st REVIEW for the GREATEST BAND of 2010!!!
I saw them live in concert about a week ago- greatest music I've ever heard- I was the only person in the mosh & I was crankin' my head back and forth - all of them were awesome, especially Robben Ford!!! They played all of their songs, my ultra favs "Destiny Over Me," "God & Rock 'N' Roll," & "The Darkness." Sounds almost the same, live was definitely epic! I hope other people enjoy this as much as I do.
This is GENIUS blues and rock fusion, and it arrives in 2010
If guitar-centric blues rock or jazz-rock fusion or would fall within your favored genres, like they do mine, this album is an unbelievable fantasy come true. Collectively (speaking of the quartet members), I have at least 15 of their prior albums. And this is fresh. I bought this album knowing some kick-butt instrumental genius was coming, but I’m amazed at their new collaboration, and how much I generally appreciate the vocals here also. Yes, I caught them performing live in 2010 ... Yoshi’s/Oakland – two shows. Incredible. Thank you.
This is GENIUS blues and rock fusion, and it arrives in 2010
This seems very much like a very important album. If guitar-centric blues rock or jazz-rock fusion would fall within your favored genres, like they do mine, this album is an unbelievable fantasy come true. Collectively (speaking of the quartet members), I have at least 15 of their prior albums. And this is fresh. I bought this album knowing some kick-butt instrumental genius and hard blues were coming, but I’m amazed at their new collaboration, because there's a lot of transitional nuance and soloist work from the jazz/fusion side. Give us MORE !!!
As this album stands on its own as it is, I love it - I NEED IT. Few albums have ever inspired or synthesized me as a listener like this one does. And I'm also impressed with how much I generally appreciate the vocals here also. Normally I'm into instrumental work exclusively, and any of these cats could carry instrumental only, but the vocals expand things too. The solos and instrumental work never leave the scene, either. Wonderful. Yes, I caught them performing live in 2010 ... Yoshi’s/Oakland – two shows. Incredible. Thank you.
