Album Review

Just the good ol' boys, back before the controversial (love him or loathe him) Kevin Cronin made REO top-heavy with ballads. Curly crooner Cronin did provide some smooth yin to fiery axe-kicker Gary Richrath's rough yang, so this platter drops some rather faceless barroom boogie. But unsung keyboardist Neal Doughty's chops are as sharp as ever, and REO would salvage the smoking "Sophisticated Lady" and the sleazy anthem "157 Riverside Avenue" for their never-ending live oeuvre. Most songs are good, hard bits with nary a trace of Hi Infidelity's infectious bubble rock. You know the amount of subtlety expected from a band that titles a tune "Prison Women" (later appearing on the premium Jailhouse Rock: Hits from the Big House collection). Like most old-timers, a return to these earthy roots would no doubt help REO out in their latter, uninspired years. ~ Whitney Z. Gomes, Rovi

Original REO Speedwagon

The first REO album produced brings back memories of growing up in the midwest when no one else in the country had even heard of REO. One of my favorite Reo albums. This was before Kevin Cronin became the singer (REO TWO) and the band became more commercial. Good tight playing on all tracks. 157 Riverside Avenue is worth a listen. If you have never heaard this entire album before, it is worth hearing. REO at their beginning. GREAT!!!!!

I was there when R.E.O. performed at Eastern Illinois University

R. E. O. Speedwagon gave an impromptu concert at the EIU football field in the early 70's when this album first came out. The neighbors complained that they were too loud. I took my girlfriend (now wife) to the free concert. What great memories!

Better

Way better than their 80's stuff

Three bands were the undisputed arena rock kings of the early '80s — Styx, Journey, and REO Speedwagon — yet all weren't overnight success stories (in fact, each group began pursuing different musical styles originally — prog rock, fusion, and straight-ahead hard rock, respectively, before transforming slowly into chart-topping mainstream rockers). REO Speedwagon first formed in 1968, via a pair of University of Illinois students, keyboardist Neal Doughty and drummer Alan Gratzer....
