Album Review
Singer/songwriter Steve Means may be a transplanted Nashville resident from Cincinnati with a college following, but listening to his debut EP Rescue Me, it would be easy to assume that somewhere in his résumé was a stint at the Berklee School of Music. There isn't, but Means has that Berklee sound in which pop flirts with jazz. The guitar licks are tasty, the rhythm section has a percolating groove, and Means uses his phlegmy tenor to caress his sensitive, romantic lyrics, occasionally jumping into a falsetto note unexpectedly. Younger listeners inevitably will be reminded of Berklee's own John Mayer, while slightly older ones will think of Michael Franks. It's a sophisticated adult pop sound that's pleasing to the ears, but the field may not support another voice so much like those that have gone before (and are still around).

Keepin the funk alive
Breakthrough album, very mature sound with funk, soul, and well developed song writing. "X-Ray Eyes" is a perfect opener with jazzy licks and catchy lyrics. "Woman without a Name" is a ballad that brings out the best of his writing... "Twisted" could very easily be my favorite, a good feeling, addictive song with funk. And not a better finish with "Rescue Me." Rising talent with a bright future. Must have!
Steve Means is great, buy the CD
I just got his CD after hearing him here in Nashville. He is great, extremely soulful beats with smooth lyrics. I highly suggest buying and listening to him. Scott
Why hasn't anyone heard of this guy?
steven means has an incredible voice that is backed up by calming lyrics that relate to our lives in everyday. Just take the time to really listen to this album and hear what he's saying and you won't be unsatified. Psst: tell your friends his music deserves to be recognized.
