Album Review

Heavily influenced by his move back from Oakland, CA, to Portland, ME, Resurgam is left-field hip-hop producer Alias' homecoming album, one that completes what's likely an unintentional trilogy of "personal journey" albums. The homesick Muted came first in 2003, then 2005 saw the release of Lillian, a sweet, family-influenced album credited to Alias with his brother Ehren and named after their grandmother. Resurgam — a Latin word meaning "I shall rise again" — features the usual murky, misty, and melancholy touches that characterize Alias' work, but there's also a surprising amount of gentle, pleasant music that could help a mixtape transition from Ulrich Schnauss to Röyksopp. "I Heart Drum Machines" features looping keyboard lines that are positively ethereal, while "Weathering," with special guest the One AM Radio, could be the most "comfy slippers" moment in the whole Anticon catalog. As the Harold Budd-styled piano of "Oakland Morning" gives way to the human beatbox in "MG Jack," Alias reminds everyone why he belongs on the "avanthop" label, but the line between indie electronic and left-field hip-hop has never been so blurry. This just means the album suits the Anticon crowd to a T and could easily seduce newcomers with a taste for the unclassifiable. Putting paranoia and noir to the side for the moment, Alias has created his most welcoming and positive dream world on Resurgam, an album where the creaks comfort and the low cloud cover comes off as heavenly.

For the Yoni Wolf Track

I only bought Well Water Black because I find most of Alias' stuff to be mostly boring but peppered with great tracks (except for Alias and Tarsiers which was awesome throughout... And Selling Live Water which might be my favorite hip-hop album ever but he only produced that one). Anyhow, the track he produced for Yoni Wolf of Why? fame is almost epic in its length and construction. Yoni begins the song in his wavering falseto and while this can get grating the beat Alias lays down behind it fits perfectly. The song then let's loose with a complicated drum machiene beat under a poppy indie rock guitar line before slowing back down to allow Yoni's familiar monotone rap style to start up. Just a really great overall song that brings out both Alias and Yoni's talents. Like a say, I haven't heard the rest of the album and I don't have the money to test drive it right now (I'm over the whole stealing music deal) but if you're a fan of any of Alias or Why's stuff absolutely pick up Well Water Black.

Sonic Masterpeice

I'll preface this by saying I'm an Alias fan, and know a lot about the man's music and work ethic. This album is an incredible technical accomplishment. Over the years Alias has accomplished a lot in music. From his first works featuring his own verses and a more classic approach to hip hop production, to his instrumental dark and minimalistic 'Muted' and 'All Things Fixable' period, his style and methods have changed and evolved as time passed. This album is certainly no exception. Guitars, both electric and acoustic, are featured heavily. He blends his hip hop roots with styles as varied as folk, shoegaze, ambient, and industial. As an aspiring music engineer, I can't help but marvel at his ability to layer and refine his tracks with various instrumentation, elements, and effects .. and watch as all of these genres and influences blend together into a symphonic experience. The melodies on 'Resurgam' are hauntingly beautiful and cohesive. 'Death Watch' is a standout in this regard, as mentioned before. The beats are punchy and get your head nodding. It's probably not like much you've heard before, but damn if it isn't good.

Moody and Hypnotic

Very ambient and moody, this Cd is a welcome treat. I feel my mind drift off as the songs float through my head. Great stuff truly great. Listen to DeathWatch and Weathering.
