Album Review
Technical metal for the sake of being technical? That certainly could be a fitting summary of Germany's fleet-fingered metal act Obscura, who forgo anything resembling melody in favor of shredding and good old-fashioned noise — as evidenced throughout their debut album, Retribution, which was remastered/reissued by Relapse Records in 2010 (with a few bonus tracks tacked on). Retribution remains one fierce beast — full of so much stop-start riffing that those who are prone to motion sickness should proceed with the utmost caution. Add to it some oh-so-delightful death metal-esque vocals, and you have an album that is sure to please the most ardent extreme metal enthusiast. Looking for variety? You've come to the wrong place. But if you're looking for a pretty darn intense metallic attack from front to back, then Obscura's Retribution is worthy of some close inspection.

Same Band Different Mindset
This album actually predates Cosmogenesis and is a re-release by the awesome Obscura. A lot of the songs resemble plain thrash metal, but given a closer look at the songs that clock at over 5 min. and you'll see what led to Cosmogenesis. It was pretty cool seeing them cover Lack of Comprehension by Death, WHICH ITUNES NEEDS MORE OF, but I digress. This album is actually worth a listen and it doesn't disappoint on the speed.
Face Melting Metal
What an amazing group of musicians Obscura are. This album use to be what you call "obscure" hahah, until they re-released it and now people are taking notice to it. How can you forget this album. Its simply amazing, from the face melting riffs to the brutal vocals which remind me of old school death metal. The riffs sound very early death metal influenced mixed with some thrash. Not to mention, it includes three covers of influential death metal bands Death, Suffocation and Morbid Angel. If you buy this expecting "Cosmogenesis",you might wanna be think again. Buy this album with an open mind and I believe you'll love it. This is modern metal at its best. I can only hope these guys stay around a LONG, LONG time.
