Album Review

Retrospective is an 18-track collection that features the bulk of Leon Russell's greatest hits ("Tight Rope," "Roll in My Sweet Baby's Arms," "Lady Blue," "Back to the Island"), plus many key album tracks. Since Russell was primarily an album artist, this approach doesn't necessarily do him justice, but for listeners who only want the hits, this will do. However, the double-disc Gimme Shelter: The Best of Leon Russell is a better, more thorough overview and is the one serious fans should acquire.

Retrospective

I have loved Leon's voice since the '70's.This was one of the 1st albums I replaced when I stopped playing vinyl. I don't usually buy this "oldies" but he was a classic that could not be passed by.
He was so different from the usual played on the radio. I am so happy that he is still singing, his voice sounds great! Thanks Leon. Those were the days!

Great album!

Fantastic album

I had forgotten about Leon. Thanks to Elton John I was reminded of this artist that I had enjoyed many years ago. He is such a soulful guy. The collection does not have a single track I don't like. I play this album all the time and not just a few songs like other albums I have. His unique style and delivery is so enjoyable. I highly recommend the entire album. Do yourself a favor and BUY this one!

The ultimate rock & roll session man, Leon Russell's long and storied career includes collaborations with a virtual who's who of music icons spanning from Jerry Lee Lewis to Phil Spector to the Rolling Stones. A similar eclecticism and scope also surfaced in his solo work, which couched his charmingly gravelly voice in a rustic yet rich swamp pop fusion of country, blues, and gospel.
