Album Review
The reputation of Boogie Down Productions leader KRS-One began to slip in the early '90s as he spent more time educating than performing. He hit back at his critics with the slamming Return of the Boom Bap, his first official solo release. Leaving behind the detailed production of the last BDP album, Sex and Violence, Boom Bap returns the MC to the spare, gritty territory of Criminal Minded. KRS-One sounds reinvigorated, as well, spitting out his rhymes with fury and intelligence. Although the record isn't as didactic as Edutainment or Sex and Violence, KRS-One hasn't made his lyrics simplistic, nor has he abandoned his cutting, intelligent social commentary. The combination of hard, basic beats and exciting rhymes makes Return of the Boom Bap a genuine comeback for KRS-One, one of the founding figures of modern hip-hop.
Customer Reviews
Classic Hip-Hop
You can't consider yourself a true fan of hip-hop music and culture if you don't know KRS-One and Boogie Down Productions like the back of your hand. This album brings back good memories of the golden era when consciousness permeated throughout hip-hop. I remember being in high school and chanting songs like "Black Cop" and "Sound of da Police" with pride and dignity and my fist in the air. KRS is one of the illest MCs of all time, so use this and his other albums as a "blueprint" of what lyricism should be. DJ Premier and Show's production are not to be missed either. Damn, I miss good hip-hop...
One of the best Hip Hop albums of ALL TIME.
This is quintessential hip hop at it's finest! Boom Bap! F- Yeah! This album, alongside "The Art of Storytelling" by Slick Rick, "Chronic 2001", "Marshall Mathers LP", "Reasonable Doubt" by Jay-Z and LL Cool J's "G.O.A.T." made me fall in love with hip hop forever. All these classic albums I listed have one major thing in common: almost every track on the record is a 5 star classic. BUY THE WHOLE ALBUM! you'll thank me
KRS-One's First Solo Album
KRS-One did a few albums as BDP (Boogie Down Productions) after Scott died...but this is his first [solo] album. Very good if you like BDP! Dont have it? Buy it!
