An Underrated Album

While this album isn't on par with the band's best work, it is a very solid collection of songs. The band is exploring their Brian Wilson influences (continuing a tradition started by OUT OF TIME'S "Near Wild Heaven" and continued on UP's fantastic "At My Most Beautiful"). The album is full of dense, multi-layered gems like "The Lifting", "I've Been High" and "Summer Turns To High". There are also songs that are just classic REM like "Imitation of Life", "She Just Wants To Be" and "I'll Take The Rain". This album may not get as much praise as their masterpieces (and it isn't on the level of LIFES RICH PAGEANT, OUT OF TIME, or AUTOMATIC FOR THE PEOPLE) but this is a very good album that never got the respect it deserves.

To Sleep or not to Sleep

I like the album but it was very quiet and uninspiring. Very artsy and very talented it is. Lyrically beautiful and lush soundscapes. Stipe lays down a record that is hypnotic at times. I use this record to put me to sleep. That is not what I think that a rock album should do for me. If a very quiet and mellow trip into the field with these talented Georgians is what you want go ahead and make the purchase.

Not typical REM, but good nonetheless

REM's Reveal is given less credit than it deserves. "All the Way to Reno," "Saturn Return," and "I'll Take the Rain" are all favorites of mine. Take a look at this album with open eyes, you may be surprised by what you find.

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

R.E.M. marked the point when post-punk turned into alternative rock. When their first single, "Radio Free Europe," was released in 1981, it sparked a back-to-the-garage movement in the American underground. While there were a number of hardcore and punk bands in the U.S. during the early '80s, R.E.M. brought guitar pop back into the underground lexicon. Combining ringing guitar hooks with mumbled, cryptic lyrics and a D.I.Y. aesthetic borrowed from post-punk, the band simultaneously sounded traditional...
