Interesting Organ work
“NO OTHER INSTRUMENT is so victimized by stereotype as the organ, which the vast majority tend to associate with church, and probably with funerals, B movies, Halloween… And I think the organist’s image has really suffered. So I want to get in there and put on a show, because that’s what the organ is, after all. How Unfortunate
How very unfortunate that Cameron Carpenter has wider exposure: ladies and gentlemen this is not organ music as it should be played; rather it is organ music grossly distorted for the purpose of sheer shock value. Mr. Carpenter follows none of the composer's suggestions nor, often, even their instrumentation and the gross perversion of superlative works such as Bach's Toccata and Fugue, Chopin's Revolutionary Etude, and Bach's chorale-prelude on Nun Komm, der heiden Heiland, are stripped of all their poetry and played instead at blistering speeds and utilizing incomprehensible and often ugly registration. I would not recommend this album at all.
It is what it is - and it is most impressive...
I don't think Cameron Carpenter ever intended to give us the last definitive statement concerning Baroque performance practice, or to shed new light on Mendelssohn's organ sonatas. In many ways he reminds me of pianist Arcadi Volodos (and yes, he even takes one of Volodos' signature pieces, the Horowitz Carmen Variations) with a "shock and awe" debut disc of keyboard acrobatics. I first became acquainted with this young man through his YouTube videos, and some of the pieces performed there are given the full studio treatment here. I feel this man has the makings of a major career, and he could well revive interest in the organ as something more than a cathedral or funeral-home instrument. I find his interpretations refreshing, interesting, and often astounding, and welcome more recordings. A most impressive debut, and make no bones about it, this will not be a show that will close shortly after opening night.
