iTunes Review

This EP is meant for people interested in just Zevon’s most obvious hits. The version of “Lawyers, Guns and Money” is the studio version and radio edit. The live version from Stand In the Fire is the definitive take. The remainders are all solid picks. Zevon’s “Mellow Mafia” from Los Angeles is anything but. Yes, they were radio-friendly for the time, but nothing can stop Zevon’s striking persona. He hits just the right note as a threatening baritone with a devilish side. “Excitable Boy” is the tale of enthusiasm gone awry. “Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner” is a demented tale and a horror story (it’s also one of David Letterman’s favorite Zevon tunes). “Werewolves of London” is universally known. “I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead” became Zevon’s personal anthem. While albums such as Warren Zevon, Excitable Boy, Stand In the Fire and others are advisable, casual fans can’t go wrong with anything here.

Going on the cheap?

Frankly, this is an abomination. Warren Zevon cannot be reduced to 5 songs but if you are willing to take the hottest lady you know on a date to a fast food joint and be satisfied with a handshake at the end of the night, then this is the collection for you. Otherwise spend the extra 4.99 and get the second album, self-titled Warren Zevon, and get some of the best of his songs you never hear on the radio. And then pony up for one of his greatest hits complitations but make sure it includes Knocking on Heaven's door!

Good Songs and Good ol' Warren Zevon

Those are Warren Zevon's best. No questions asked. Good Job, iTunes

One of the most acute and savagely satiric songwriters of his era, Warren Zevon was born in Chicago on January 24, 1947. His formative years were as colorful as the scenarios played out in his music: his father was a professional gambler, a lifestyle which forced the family to move frequently, and Zevon spent most of his formative years in California and Arizona. He learned to play piano, focusing primarily on classical material before a disintegrating home life led him into pop music, as well as...
