iTunes Review

By the time Rhyme Pays was released in 1987 Ice-T was almost thirty years old, and had spent several years honing his craft in the Los Angeles underground rap scene. T’s diction, delivery, and formidable storytelling skills are the result of years of hard work. Of course, what grabbed everyone’s attention was the rapper’s raw subject matter, heralded by the immortal single “6 ‘N the Mornin,” which helped to define gangsta rap, and has since become a hip-hop standard. Even today, the song’s portrayal of the criminal lifestyle is as potent as poison and as sharp as a dagger. Nowadays rappers talk about all kinds of shocking things, but none of them can match Ice-T for style. His every line is delivered like a pimp slap across the jaw. A good part of the album’s force comes from its superlative production team: Afrika Islam did the beats and DJs Aladdin and Evil E did the scratches, which are righteously vicious. It doesn’t matter than Rhyme Pays is now more than twenty years old — drive slow down any street with this turned up on the stereo, and you’re still guaranteed to be the baddest player on the block.

Classic!

Buy this if you love hip hop.

O.G.

ICE-T was and always will remain one of my favorite "gangsta" rappers. Why? Because he was one of the first and biggest, and unlike many of the "other" gangsta wannabees, he was REALLY an O.G. and wasn't just rapping with a black hat and a pair of Loc's! Rhyme Pays has several of ICE T staples, including the title track, 409 and 6 N' the Mornin'. If you wanna relive that old school hip hop hardcore, this is the album. Also check out ICE T "Power" and "The Iceberg".

The Rhyme Pays Report

This album is a "Certified Hip Hop/Gangster Classic!". This Album was the gateway to the Westcoast "back in tha day"'! For those who don't know...Never will! Because they don't know real Hip Hop!

Ice-T (born Tracy Morrow) has proven to be one of hip-hop's most articulate and intelligent stars, as well as one of its most frustrating. At his best, the rapper has written some of the best portraits of ghetto life and gangsters, as well as some of the best social commentary hip-hop has produced. Just as often, he can slip into sexism and gratuitous violence, and even then his rhymes are clever and biting. Ice-T's best recordings have always been made in conjunction with strong collaborators, whether...
