Album Review
Perhaps inspired by the experimental drum'n'bass being created by Squarepusher (a recent signee to his Rephlex label), Richard D. James' third major-label album as Aphex Twin was his first to work with jungle — though, to his credit, he had released the breakbeat EP Hangable Auto Bulb almost a year earlier. Contemporaries Orbital and Underworld were beginning to incorporate moderate use of drum'n'bass in their work as well, but this album was more extreme than virtually all jungle being made at the time. The beats are jackhammer quick and even more jarring considering what is — for the most part — laid over the top: the same fragile, slow-moving melodies that characterized Aphex Twin's earlier ambient works. Most overtly disturbing is "Milkman," the first straight-ahead vocal track from Aphex Twin; the song is a child-like ode that gradually deteriorates into a bizarre fantasy concerning the milkman's wife. With all the Aphex Twin's curious idiosyncracies, though, Richard D. James Album is a very listenable record and a worthy follow-up to I Care Because You Do. [The American issue features the English EP "Girl/Boy."]

AMG review is close
It really comes down to what element, or elements, of Aphex Twin you enjoy. Personally, I'm partial to the works along the lines of Selected Ambient Works I and II. But AMG is correct, you do see the Squarepusher, click-and-bass influence in this album. And more power to him. If you can devote as much time and effort into the production of more complicated drum-and-bass type beats, go for it. Aphex has always been into tonality, and dislocation. As soon as you think you've settled into a melody on this album the broken beats throw you for a loop. His grasp of melody shines regardless of the bizarre instrument kits or clicks he arranges on top of it all. Stand out tracks include: 4, the original mix of Girl / Boy, Peek 824545201 and Yellow Calx Milkman is absolutely disturbing, and oh so very Aphex. Enjoy!
WONDERFUL MOSTLY
I bought this album (every song) cause I am a home studio electronic music hobbyist and I heard this Aphex Twin guy is the current genius of the genre. I did not actually expect to like it, and more purchased it to study it and see "where it is" with "those in the know" of electronic sounds, but I wound up really enjoying much of it. The drum rhythms are fantastic, but to me it is his gift for melody and harmony that really sets him apart. Though, I am a bit put off by the "naughty boy" moments in some of the songs here. The way i see it, if you are this talented, you don't have to pander to the less thoughtful elements of the music listening audience. Shock value is for those who would not otherwise produce anything that would get noticed. But aside from that aside, I am really enjoying this album, and find much of it modestly breathtaking. Damon
Turning Into My Favorite, Just By Style
This was in fact my first experience with the genius of Aphex Twin. I quickly fell in love with the two tracks '4' & 'Goon Gumpas', and soon enough bought the album song by song. The style he displays her is an abrasively technical drill 'n' bass excursion with soft, gorgeous ambience hovering over it alot of it sounding like 19th century strings, very inventive. The more I jam it, the more I just get lost in it's amazing flow. James creates these prodigal musical anomolies with mind blowing tracks like 'Corn Mouth', 'To Cure A Weakling Child', 'Girl / Boy' & Yellow Calx'. The last 1:18 seconds of Corn Mouth remains the most amazing thing I've heard from any of his works, an assaulting drill line just pummels harshely over this glowing ambience that feels like crying, God too perfect. His usage of breaking samples and is so autehntic and rhythymically off the map. Noises like bouncing, plops moving by the speed of light over delicately maneuvered sound textures. Even a noise that sounds like a secada bug is present in a few jams. Definetley take advantage of the L18 snore rush track too, sick jungle flow. I also think you should buy this cd in a store though to get a reaction to that great mugshot! After buying all the songs here, I decided to purchase it for real in a record store and the girl looked at me like I was purchasing the anarchists cook book! classic. But if you're unsure of the whole cd at once heres 5 tracks to get you started: '4', 'Corn Mouth', 'Goon Gumpas', 'Girl / Boy' & 'To Cure A Weakling Child'
