Album Review
Once upon a time, Florida was a hotbed for death metal bands. And judging from the emergence of a group like the Absence, this aforementioned extreme metal style is still going strong in the area. On their sophomore full-length, 2007's Riders of the Plague, these Tampa natives unleash a downright ferocious racket — speed metal riffing, Iron Maiden-esque guitar harmonies, runaway train drumming, and more. Also included are vocals that alternate between screaming (the album opening title track) and Cookie Monster growling ("Dead and Gone"). And you've got to love the fact that there is an instrumental smack dab in the middle of the album ("Prosperity"). If bands such as Entombed, Cannibal Corpse, and Six Feet Under are still in heavy rotation on your iPod, then the Absence's Riders of the Plague is certainly worthy of taking up some precious megabytes.

American Melodeath In it's Finest Hour
I actually pre-ordered this from Metal Blade (so I got an autographed album for only $9.99, plus my name is in it). From start to finish, this album is pure heaven. It far excedes From Your Grave, something I didn't think was possible, and I know consider it the best album I own. I would suggest tracks 1, 3, 8, and 10 specifically, but you will certainly not be disappointed were you to buy the whole album. Into the Pit is a flawless Testament cover. So much so that I would go so far as to say that it is one of the best band on band covers in the history of metal. If you are a thrash or melodeath fan, or you just enjoy plain good metal, this album is a must own.
Album of the Year
Since there is so much music in the world, a lot of new stuff just seems old and it seems like you've heard it before. It makes me wonder how The Absence find out ot make songs that are different. Who knows what goes on in these guy's heads when they right their music. It's not realy that different from anything else out there, but it's for sure better than everything else. This isn't being biased or anything. Now I listen to pretty much every type of metal and this is my favorite album of the year. The Absence is a band that keeps very true to their genre, metal. They are not metalcore, at all. You can call them thrash, but they are the prime example of a true metal band. World Divides is possibly the best song that the band has created, but not by a long shot. As I listened to the whole ablum for the first time, I would say this songs the best, wiat, no this one is, actualy this one is. That happened throughout the whole thing and the conclusion I made was that the album as a whole is amazing. These guys play their instruments very well. They are technical, but they're not all over the place. The band keeps a great sound and rythem instead of just playing as fast as you can without even thinking what notes are being played. It's obviouse that The Absence put a hell of a lot of work into Riders of the Plague and you should respect that. Buy this album. This is and will remain the best album of the year. All of the people listening to As I lay dying's new album are missing out.
A great sophomore album
I already liked this band having heard their first album last year, but The Absence really raised the bar for Riders of the Plague. The guitar work is even more impressive than what they displayed on From Your Grave. These guys have got a lot of talent, and I think they have the potential to be something great, as long as they retain their style (it would be horrible if they sold out later in their career).
