The pairing of P. Diddy (corporate rap’s super-svengali) with 8 Ball & MJG (pioneers of street-bred Southern hip-hop) is dubious to say the least, but could any other partnership have produced the bombastic majesty that is “Cruzin’”? The song merges all of Diddy’s larger-than-life tendencies (including a cheesy hook sung by Slim of 112) with 8 Ball & MJG’s muscular, masterful brand of Memphis hip-hop, thereby transforming the standard Southern cruising song into a dazzling radio anthem of epic proportions. The legendary Memphis duo completely own Ridin’ High — even the radio-friendly concessions (“Pimpin’ Don’t Fail Me Now,” “Take It Off”) seem like a means to slip the group’s seriously rugged, heartfelt hood rap into the hands of the public. “Relax & Take Notes,” “30 Rocks,” and “Get Low” are Southern rap boulders, sure to satisfy fans who have thrived on the duo’s brand of formidable street rap for all of 15 years. While Diddy can hopefully bring the sound of these Memphis heroes to the huge audience they deserve, Ridin’ High is proof that 8 Ball & MJG won’t be changing their time-tested technique for anyone.

8Ball & MJG-Ridin High
Their seventh album, rap duo 8Ball & MJG deliver Ridin High, after going gold with Living Legends, here is how they did with their second album on Bad Boy. Relax And Take Notes: Project Pat assists, on this great production that samples Biggie. First single that was a banger. 4/5 Ridin High: With a sing songy hook, a more radio friendly track that has a dance feel to it. Production was solid. 3.5/5 Turn Up The Bump: Danja creates nice banger here, as the duo shines on this club banger. 3.5/5 Cruzin: Midnite Black's glossy and almost pop feel, especially when Slim's cheesy hook comes in, is a different look of for 8Ball and MJG. Hardcore fans may not like the radio move. 3.5/5 Whatchu Gonna Do: Pimp C joins the duo for a menacing chant and bouncy synths. 3/5 30 Rocks: Production wise it is similar to Yung Joc's "Patron", it was decent with Diddy. 3/5 Hickory Dickory Dock: Great production that has a club bangin feel, definitely a catchy hook that is aimed at the clubs. 3.5/5 Runnin Out Of Bud: Yet another southern guest appearance, Killer Mike drops a verse for an ode to weed and how their out. 3/5 Clap On: Fellow labelmate, Yung Joc has a catchy hook that is assisted with good production. 3/5 Alcohol P***y W**d: Anthemic track for the hood about what most rappers talk about. Nice horns, but they say what they like. 3/5 Pimpin Don't Fail Me Now: Radio aimed track by Jazze Pha, Juvenile joins for this fluffy skipper. 2/5 Worldwide: Hard hitting production, nice hook, Toomp's beat is greatly a reason for this song's success. 3/5 Take It Off: Love song, Pooh Bear sings a smooth hook, isn't anything new, a slow jam. 3/5 Memphis: Great sample and assisting organ, Al Kapone joins on this track to rep their city. 3.5/5 Get Low: Skipper. Bad subject matter, too played out. 1.5/5 Stand Up: Decent track with heavy guitars. 3/5 Ridin High is a southern ride, filled with talk of women, alcohol, weed, and gangsta braggadocio. For those who like crunk bangin street anthems, you will enjoy this. 8Ball & MJG fans may be disappointed about the lack of hardcore street cuts, as their tends to be more club bangers and even radio aimed tracks. "Cruzin" works because of its smooth R&B feel, "Ridin High" and "Pimpin Don't Fail Me Now" are both radio attempts that work mildly, "Relax & Take Notes" is the most noteworthy track here. From the bangin bass, to the Biggie sample, it bumps. Club anthems include, "Hickory Dickory Dock", "Clap On", "Worldwide" and "Stand Up". "Take It Off" is the sex track, that could be a skipper, overall a solid album. Rating 7 out of 10
8Ball & MJG Doin It Big
Don't go off buying the whole album, you're better off with just these four songs.... Relax & Take Notes | Clap On | Ridin' High | Cruzin'... all of them are great! (Relax & Take Notes) - The chorus to this song just gets you pumped up and the beat has a west side vibe to it.... (Clap On) - Yung Joc spit fire in his verse, definitely a good song... (Ridin' High) - Good Lyrics, beat and just gets you in the mood to jump in your ride and Ri-Ri-Ri-Ri-Ridin High.... (Cruzin') - Three Six was a great addition to it and Slim of course tied the whole song together, great song....
One of the Best of 2007
In my opinion, best CD by Ball & G. Definately the best rap CD of '07 so far, and by the end of the year, still be near the top. The best songs are... Relax and Take Notes Ridin' High Turn Up the Bump Watchu Gonna Do 30 Rocks Runnin' Out of Bud Clap On Pimpin' Don't Fail Me Now Stand Up Alot of people like Cruzin' but I like it, just not as much as these songs. Sorry if you don't like it, but this will make you happy, that's there confirmed second single. Overall, this CD is recommended, only if you like true hip-hop. Must buy, but never buy from iTunes store, I always buy CD from actual store, I like having the CD, not just the songs.
