Signature album of the 80s

DD exploded right as I was a sophomore in high school. I was into Zeppelin and other (now classic) rock but this record got my attention. I was a tech nerd and this was the second CD I ever bought - Police/Synchronicity was the first. Still have both!

What's to be said about Rio? It still holds up today. Great beats, great arrangements, lots of emotion and big ideas. Sounds best on headphones or a BIG audio system. You may be burned out on Hungry Like The Wolf, but tracks like New Religion and My Own Way still kick it. The best least-known track is The Chauffer, a dark experiment that bears repeat listening. Great stuff.

Enjoy it.

One of the best overall albums to date

And with this amazing album and the start of a group of young, punkish, youth-inspiring British boys came not only the start of a new generation, but the birth of MTV and a concept we call THE MUSIC VIDEO!!! Though Madonna and others had their role in the channel's founding, Duran Duran is, without question, THE BAND that made the music network. Such a shame that MTV centers on everything but music nowadays, and on the occasion that they do show a music video, it is, without surprise, pure trash. In addition to the highly-overplayed "Hungry Like The Wolf", and the legendary "Rio", this album boasts plenty of great tracks that capture the essence of the band, including the melodic "Lonely In Your Nightmare" and the spacey "Save A Prayer." Great easy-listening album that flows nicely, and above all, an excellent opportunity for the basic '80s fan to get past the basic "Hungry Like The Wolf" and discover all of Duran Duran's many talents!

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Duran Duran personified new wave for much of the mainstream audience. And for good reason, too. Duran Duran's reputation was built through music videos, which accentuated their fashion-model looks and glamorous sense of style. Without music videos, it's likely that their pop-funk — described by the group as the Sex Pistols meets Chic — would never have made them international pop stars. While Duran Duran did have sharper pop sensibilities than their new romantic contemporaries like Spandau...
