Riot Act continues Pearl Jam’s quiet stealth streak of quality hard rock albums that exist beneath the radar. Once the world’s most popular hard rock band, Pearl Jam has since settled upon being one of the world’s largest cult bands, playing music that rarely attempts to communicate beyond its targeted audience of hardcore music enthusiasts. Though Eddie Vedder possesses the firepower of a true arena rock singer, he just as often prefers to turn inward and express himself from the deeper recesses of his soul. It’s no accident that the album begins with the inward-pointing “Can’t Keep” where the sound holds to an unsettling quiet despite its potential aggressions. “Save You” follows with a broader sweep, but even with drummer Matt Cameron slamming these songs into place and Mike McCready and Stone Gossard cranking up their amps, the songs retain a private mystery. “Bu$hleaguer” works up the band’s political conscience. “I Am Mine” balances the band’s rock ego with a chilling elliptical melody. At this rate, Pearl Jam is sincerely building up its reputation as rock’s most overlooked band in broad daylight.

Mature

I hate that people always refer to "Ten" as the epitome of Pearl Jam's creative skills. They have done so much more since that album, and while it is still great, there are others I think that surpass it. This is one of those albums. How can anyone argue that "I Am Mine" or "Love Boat Captain" do not have the power of "Jeremy" or "Alive"? While "Ten" put Pearl Jam on the map, it is their ability to consistently grow that ensures their place in the pantheon of rock artists.

Another Amazing Piece of Pearl Jam

For the first time in six years, Pearl Jam decided to look for the rougher side of things that had haunted their first three albums. The last song before this album's "Save You" to capture such a tone was the stellar "Do the Evolution" and it has been too long. Among the rough edges outlining this work of art are some more melodic songs like "I Am Mine", "Thumbing My Way", and "Ghost" which are beautiful ballads. Pearl Jam finally found their way to intertwine the two extremes again, resulting in an album reminiscent of Vitalogy, although it is much more refined and shows finally what a mature Pearl Jam can do. Nothing Short Of Amazing

Of course, this is no Ten (that's nothing short of a masterpiece!), but this is up there. Every song is fantastic, and the singles are some of their best. Save You and I Am Mine are both in my top 25 list (for ANY band!), and they deserve to be. Although I recommend this whole album, the best songs to buy are Save You, Cropduster, I am Mine, and Get Right.
