Album Review
Move over, Avril; there's a new gun in town. And even though Paramore's lead singer Hayley Williams is a few years younger than her predecessor, she has a way bigger set of vocal pipes. Lavigne and Williams share a similar register, but Williams belts it out with way more control and authority. She may even be more of a respectable pop idol since her image isn't manufactured to be rebellious and angst-ridden; instead, Williams appears to be a genuinely sweet girl, bottling up a huge voice and a heart full of lost loves. On 2008's Riot!, she fills the majority of her punk-pop tales with emo angst and declarations of boy woes. Contrived as this may sound, her lyrics feel authentic and representative of actual teenage puppy love, where a breakup feels like the end of the world. Filled with crossover potential, the songs are consistant and zippy with catchy hooks in the vein of Boys Like Girls fronted by a young Shirley Manson. Meanwhile, the production is sparkling and heavily compressed due to the golden hands of David Bendeth, but these ultra-clean sonics also tend to cramp up the band — clouding the dynamics and turning the listening experience into a relatively risk-free one. When the group breaks away from the chugging guitar Fall Out Boy formula, they're at their best. Mid-song breakdowns and cathartic power ballads (think "Don't Speak") showcase the band's maturity as musicians. More importantly, Williams shines through in these openings. In the last track, "Born for This," she takes a break from her love confessions and commands everyone to sing like it's the last song they will ever sing, making for a sentimental finale and a perfect closer for the live shows.
Customer Reviews
Absolutely amazing and shocking!
I really wanted to write a review only after I had listened to the album multiple times and now I have. Maybe it won't get seen this way, but I really, really need to write a review about how excellent this album is. Riot! as a whole is very spectacular to me - it has so much more depth than the first Paramore album - and after the first listen of each song, I was hooked. For a Pessimistc, I'm Pretty Optimistic 4.5/5 - Well, at first, this sounded a lot like some of the other Paramore songs and I thought that maybe this song was going to be a dissappointment, but soon enough the lyrics changed into something that I easily was listening to over and over again. The song title in itself is interesting, but listen to this a few times and you'll love it. That's What You Get 5/5 - I absolutely love this song. The lyrics are simply amazing to me and provide just so much satisfication because there is not a single dissappointment in the lyrics. I feel like Hayley's voice is at her best in this song and I honestly feel like the whole band needs to be congratulated for such a great song! Hallelujah 9/10 - It's not my favorite, simply because it hasn't completely grown on me yet, but I am quite sure it well. The chorus to me however, is pretty magnificent, and I especially love when Hayley's voice goes up to the high notes. I feel like this will be a song that will definitely grow on me later on. Misery Business 8.5/10 - Okay, everyone knows this song since it was their first single. And just like everyone else, I was amazingly excited when it first came out, and listened to it so many times that it quickly escalated to one of the top songs on my "Top 25 Most Played" playlist. Soon enough however, I started to realize that the song was pretty repeative, and though Hayley's voice does sound amazing - it started to not have so much depth to it anymore. I still like the song, don't get me wrong, but it is probably one of my least favorites. However, considering how wonderful this album is, that still means that I've rated it on a high scale. When It Rains 10/10 - What a beautiful song, no joke. There seems to be just about everything in it and I feel like there is such meaning behind the lyrics, and the way the song is performed. Everything about it, between the instruments, and the vocals simply wow me. It's soft in a sense, but it still has so much impact on the listener. Let the Flames Begin 10/10 - This was a song that grow on me, for sure. At the beginning, sometimes I would just skip over it to get to my instant favorites, but then I really, really started to listen to lyrics and they struck me as powerful. Soon enough I was hooked and now, I'm just as eager to listen to it as any of my favorites on the album, because it has become one of my favorites. Miracle 9.7/10 - A good song, most definitely, though I don't feel it stands out as much as some of the other songs on the album. I still like it of course, though I think it needs something more at times. The lyrics are still quite good though and I feel sometimes like there's a little bit missing. It's near perfect, but no quite there. Crushcrushcrush 10/10 - One of my instant favorites on the album. The chorus and everything in between grabbed my attention quickly. It sounds so powerful to me, the lyrics, and the way each word is pronounced - and I can't stop listening to it, and at this moment in time, doubt that I'll ever be able to stop listening to this song. We Are Broken 10/10 - A simply beautiful song. It's not so fast and defintely slower than some of the other songs on the album, but it strikes you as different, and beautiful in nature. So much meaning here, once again. Fences 10/10 - My first favorite on the album. I was previewing the album basically on their myspace and this song caught my attention before anything else. The chorus, it's so completely driven, and it makes me wish I could sing like that. There's something so magnificent about the song as a whole and this song makes me feel so good. Born For This 9/10 - A fairly decent song, that has as of yet been able to completely grow on me, but I still do like it. Misery Business (Acoustic Version) 9.5/10 - I actually like this version a lot better than the other one. It seems just so much more natural as an acoutistic song. Overall, I would give this song five stars simply because none of the songs have failed to wow me. I like some better than others, but they all get me to smile, and want to jump up and dance. I get them stuck in my head and find the lyrics magnificent, and this makes me want to go to a Paramore concert even more. I would suggest buying this to anyone and as of now, I'm going to try and get all my friends interested in Paramore. This album was definitely a huge improvement over the last! =]
Amazing!!
If I could I would give this album 10 stars...but I can't. About 2 years ago I went to go see Simple Plan in concert and that's when I saw these guys. They were the first opening band and immediately when I got home I just had to check them out. By then I only had 4 songs by them. But then I started to hear them more and more and finally decided to get their album All We Know Is Falling. That's when I really started to become a fan. Hayley's voice has gotten a lot stronger and the band has really grown up a lot over the last few years. And I think that this album really shows that. These guys are awesome and you should definetly buy the album!!! Paramore rocks!!!
Paramore - Riot!
I don't know what my expectations were from Paramore's new album "Riot!", but whatever I was, they certainly surpassed them. This is an amazing album. "All We Know Is Falling" established Paramore as a spectacular new band with an original sound which appealed to a lot of people. Riot! has a very different sound. It seems a bit more "polished" than AWKIF, but still holds true to the same brilliance shown in the first album. This is my new favorite album. You should buy it all, but if you only have a few dollars to spend, buy these songs; -Misery Business (Check out the music video! So my new favorite song.) -Fences (A great song. Catchy and... well, you'll love it.) -For a Pessimist, I'm Pretty Optimistic (Wow... A great album opener. -Hallelujah (Hayleys vocals are AMAZING. ) Also, buy... Born for this, Crushcrushcrush, Miracle, We are Broken, and, well, pretty much the whole album. I want to see paramore live. They are an incredible band, I love them! Ok, well, that's it, -A
