Album Review

Having long enjoyed Mick Chorba's other, Replacements-inspired garage group Dipsomaniacs, Ripe for the Burning is the ultimate work he's threatened for a decade. His Dips' thick 'n' creamy, chunky power-pop guitar action remains on the likes of "For No One" (not the Beatles), "Bigger Empty Things," and the devilishly hooky, standout closer "Sun Makes Circles," as does his ear for a payoff tune. But the palette of this newer (greater-Philly) New Jersey four stretches wider, incorporating doses of C&W/alt-country and roots rock and brightening dashes of xylophone, keyboards, and harmonica. The toned-down guitars are given more space to ring and riff, and the quartet is tight, precise and grooving, yet never lacks hunger or soul. In short, Ripe brings back everything great about organic, roaring, kicking, melodic '80s indie rock, from the Libertines U.S. (what with the roots) to Big Dipper, Tim-era Replacements, etc. (and nowadays, Sloan). Factor in the humor of "Niki Zerenberg" (a teenage fanzine dude) and "Never Moving Out" (sorry, mom!), and the deal's sealed. Ripe for the Burning is one heck of a great-fun LP, perfect to sing along to.

Great Album!

This album is very catchy with some great guitar playing and singing. The bass playing also stands out. Almost anyone would like this. The best songs are Stop the Planet, Bigger Empty Things and Sun Makes Circles. All the songs are great! I love it more everytime i listen to it. I usually don't like this kind of music but for this i have to make an exception. Do yourself a favor and buy this album, you won't be dissapointed

Overall a great album.

this album is really fun catchy and interesting. the guitar licks riffs and solos make it stand out to me. the vocals are pretty great. best songs are, All i can Take, Carolina (im in love), and Bridges over the delaware. One of My Top Ten Albums!

The Successful Failures really outdid themselves with "Ripe for the Burning". I've listened to this album continously ever since I got it, and yet it still doesn't get old. Each track flows together seamlessly and makes this one of the few albums that can be listened to all the way through. While "Ripe" is highlighted by excellent guitar and drum work, the lyrics really stand out. Whether it be about creating a fanzine or living with your parents, Chorba's songwriting is the key factor in making this album a cut above the rest. Highlights include "Stop the Planet", "All I Can Take", "All I Wanna Know Is Your Name Dear", "For No One", "Niki Zerenberg", "Bigger Empty Things", and "Sun Makes Circles". Rob Martin's excellent drum work is featured on "All I Can Take" and "Sun Makes Circles" while bassist Ron BeChamps gives a fantastic effort in "Bridges Over the Delaware". Please don't buy just one track, buy the whole album!
