iTunes Review

Though Dave Longstreth has only been releasing music under The Dirty Projectors name for five years, he already seems to be proving himself to be a wildly inspired if willfully erratic musical visionary. Though previous Dirty Projectors albums, such as the epic Getty Address, have suffered from a lack of focus and an overflow of divergent creative impulses , Rise Above, an extremely loose re-interpretation of Black Flag’s epochal Damaged LP, may be the album on which Longstreth finally manages to synthesize his eclectic influences into a coherent whole. Longstreth’s work here, which juxtaposes hauntingly disjointed folk arrangements and staccato harmonies against Henry Rollins’ unflinchingly direct lyrics, painstakingly deconstructs the youthful aggression of songs like “Rise Above” and “Police Story,” and discovers nostalgic regret and bitter uncertainty in Black Flag’s angst filled masterpiece. With Rise Above Longstreth has managed to extract a work of singular originality and startling interpretive genius from the most unlikely of sources.

Bridge to a New Music

"Rise Above" is an excellent, dynamic, involoved, evolved, explosive, percussive, mesmerizing piece of distilled genius. The recording, done with Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear, is spacious and crisp simultaneously, allowing for a seamless blending of the gamelan inspired guitar lines, the thumping reggae bass, and the adventurous, cloud assaulting vocals. A word about the singing: listen to the "break down" section of "Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie" and tell me you have ever heard anything quite like it before. I won't believe you. This album is about moving music forward. Much has been made of the record's "Black Flag" theme in the online reviews; many of these mentions have been scornful, noting how the album doesn't have Black Flag's primal, punk energy. These criticisms remain ignorant of the artistic accomplishment achieved in building a completely new body over the skeleton of one long in the grave. Dirty Projectors have re-animated the lyrics of Ginn and company with a new spirit, transmuting anger into longing, despair into plaintive, optimistic resignation. "Rise Above" rewards repeating listenings; the subtlty of some arrangements only becomes apparent once one has become acclimated to the textural environment of this music. I would be remiss if I didn't mention that "Thirsty and Miserable" is incredibly beautiful, a near perfect song. This is one of the best records of the year. Download it. You won't regret it.

Dirty Projects get inspiration from one of their favorite punk records growing up - and put their own, unique/artsy spin on it. Unbelievable harmonies and catchiness. It may take a listen or two to hook you, but once it does - you will be listening to this for a while. Look for some of the live footage this band has on the internet. The harmonies and back up sounds are even better in a live setting. Must Have!

drained

i dont like this. they took something beautiful and drained it of all its meaning. others say the transformation is artful, but to me its bland and weak.

Dirty Projectors are the project of Dave Longstreth, a former Yale student who left college to become one of the most prolific and unique indie singer/songwriters of the early 2000s. In early 2002 Longstreth released his first album, The Graceful Fallen Mango, under his own name on the This Heart Plays Records imprint. Largely recorded on four-track with the help of friends in like-minded projects such as Wolf Colonel and Dear Nora, the album introduced Longstreth's distinctive crooning voice and...
