Folk-rocky lethario is more interesting than some of his material may imply

OK, sex in music really can't be considered breaking new grounds, but something about the A side of NYC's resident nympho C. Lorge's 2004 debut captured the ear in a good way. Lead single C–k in the P–sy did little more than repeat its title in the neighborhood of 24 times, and it still rightfully claimed a slot on Blender magazine's top 100 songs of the year. Also was the layman's folk anthem "I Want You" (nowhere near as flattering in its context) and "Balls Deep", which is a grade-A pop-rocker, either with the help of or in spite of its racy subject matter. Lorge is a fun one to grab a song from here and there, because he's got some great ones, that play with the charm-wound anticipation of a randy bachelor about to score and roll off his tongue and guitar like a well-constrcuted dirty joke. In addition to graciously including "C–k" and "Balls" as bonus tracks here, he's got a few more aces up his sleeve. Title track Rise is an excellent down-tempo musing on the all-too-relatable concern that his girl's climax is anything but genuine. And then there's the "Balls"-esque rockin' "Salute" to, with minimal speculation, a woman's self-inflicted joyride. There's some smile-provoking moments on the deeper cuts here, and he has a knack for natural-sounding rock hooks, but when he loses his silver tongue, he's hard to peg. He's not really seducing à la Maroon 5, and he's not really doing a Bloodhound Gang-style joke parade, either. Rather, he's just your average singer songwriter talking dirty without pause, and if you look too hard, he sounds a little too much like a dirty joke with no punchline. But there are some hands-down-worthwhile highlights here, and I implore you to give them a chance. He will pleasure you aurally.
