Album Review

Ringing guitars, thunderous drums, big hooks, deep-echo percussion, a voice that opens like a flower blooming on the lip of a volcano — and they come from Ireland. Sound familiar? Like a certain other band renowned for its sweeping gestures, Rubyhorse plays with passionate intensity, a fact made evident throughout Rise. In fact, they skate a little close to imitation, but they do so with such conviction — indeed, how can you conjure U2 without conviction? — that it's an easy trespass to forgive. The Edge's rhythmic, muted sixteenth-note guitar scrapes turn up on "Evergreen" as an electronic pulse — different tool, same effect. But that track also features some extraordinary twists and turns, and builds such momentum that it barrels right into "Horseless" without a break. Tasteful but dramatic keyboard work from Owen Fegan nudges their sound closer to conventional arena rock, except on "The First of the Year," whose Mellotron textures refer clearly to "Strawberry Fields Forever." They even hobnob with a real Beatle, as George Harrison contributes slide guitar fills to "Punchdrunk." With a U.S. launch like this, not to mention a transatlantic base built on birth in Cork and a home base in Boston, Rubyhorse seems like a good bet to win. ~ Robert L. Doerschuk, Rovi

Why did iTunes take their other and better album away?!

This album is good but I listen to their other album "Goodbye to all that" way more! I downloaded it off iTunes this past summer but its gone now. Sparkle on this album is good along with several others but the other album is more developed and more cohesive than this one. I'm not knocking Rubyhorse but I would love for more people to get on board but once a group is exposed on itunes you obviously want to develop your listening of the band over the entire span of their music...

U2, Oasis, and a little Beatles for flavor

Great band to see if you have the opportunity. Very talented, I'm just disappointed there's not more music available on Itunes. The last track on this disc, "The First of the Year" was the last song George Harrisson worked on before he passed away.

A Hidden Gem on a Major Label (or were on a major)

A few years ago I went to see The Calling in concert. Rubyhorse opened for them. After their set, they came towards the back of the audience, met with people, signed stuff, etc. Besides the fact that they had just put on a wonderful show (I had never heard of them and they blew me away) they were good people. Personable and kind. Based on how good they were and how melodic, yet catchy they are, I was surprised when time elapsed and one day I was at a music store and I just thought that I would check out for Rubyhorse to see if they ever released anything else. Sure enough, they had a new album. On a record label I cannot remember. I think lack of exposure is the only reason this band is not big time. This album is solid. Tracks 1-4 are killer. Just phenominal songs. "Evergreen" is kind of a "miss" in my opinion. I just usually skip it. I gave it a few chances, but now that I know the record, it is a weaker track. 6-9 are fantastic, then 10 and 11 are fair. Nothing beyond average. Because the brightspots on this record shine so bright I have to recommend it. This record is full of a variety of sounds, great vocal performances and basically not boring. Some music, even good music can seem boring. This record is far from it. Check it out.

In 1997, this small group of friends and bandmates would gather in a meat factory outside Cork City, Ireland, perfecting their songs. Taking their name from a Wonder Stuff song, Rubyhorse continued to perform but decided the best shot at success was in America. In 1998, the Irish group left for Boston, a large Irish-friendly population awaiting. Performing at an Irish pub called The Barren, word quickly spread about the band and they became the Thursday night group there for 60 weeks. The band also...
