Making a difference
@Boolez: He works with this orchestra to help keep music programs alive in Venezuela and give kids something positive to be passionate about. By recording with them, it gives their foundation immense recognition and support.
Exciting Performance
Dudamel's interpretation of Rite is wonderful and SBYO is amazing. I wouldn't expect anything less of either. Boolez mentions that it's a Youth Orchestra - this Youth Orchestra has members who are up to 27 years old. There are many Professional Players who get jobs at 22 so technically it's called a Youth Orchestra, but that's about it. The players in this Orchestra have experience and expertise far, far beyond any "US Youth Orchestra". I've taught many Clarinetists who have been members of the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra (which is considered to be one of the top Youth Orchestra's in the USA) and this Orchestra is light years above it. Judge for yourself. This performance stands on it's own (I pre-ordered it and heard the performance, not 30 second clips). I'm doubting that Boolez forked out the $ for it, though his reviews I do respect and appreciate.
Music is exciting again!
@Boolez! Boo on you! The "Dude" has made music exciting again. Who wants to hear the same piece performed identically between orchestras? Maybe, that is why concert attendance is down in the U.S. The "Dude" has inspired young musicians to create wonderfully exciting music, even though it may not be "text book". I applaud his efforts to be different.
