iTunes Review

Raspy voiced Ryan Bingham fills his second album with gusto, grit and groove. Mark Ford of Black Crowes fame mixes in timeless old-school production values, so Roadhouse Sun isn’t a huge departure from its predecessor Mescalito, but the lyrics are noticeably stewed in more political angst. A 12-string Rickenbacker jangle introduces “Dylan’s Hard Rain,” a song that contemplates the man’s 1962 song. “Country Roads” is raw Texas country rock loaded with more hooks than a tackle box. Rest assured that Bingham’s not just some twenty-something donning a western shirt and playing musical cowboys. He grew up in bucolic Texas but lived alone since his mid-teens when he worked as a ranch hand. He learned to play guitar from a mariachi neighbor — shortly after which he began playing the rodeo circuit where he often slept in the back of his truck when not couch surfing between boarder towns. A true product of hard living, the fevered, distorted twang of songs such as “Endless Ways” can make Drive-By Truckers sound like Conor Oberst.

Ryan Bingham and the Dead Horses do not get the commercial attention they deserve. Today's country music is nothing compared to what Ryan Bingham continues to put out. He and the band are amazing on this album and leave even more of an impression once seen live. Music like this comes around nowadays every so often, so do yourself a favor and find out about this album and Ryan Bingham in general.

Ryan is 2 for 2

It's hard to see how such an ambitious album retains any reflection of the band's grounded humility, but this is what you get with Ryan Bingham. The progression is good: he just rocks that much harder, sings with that much more soul than on Mescalito. Hard to compare the two albums, they are simply different. "Tell My Mother I Miss Her So," "Bluebird," and "Hey Hey Hurray" are a couple of the best songs I've heard him put out. I'll recommend this album to anybody who likes real honest music with Texas soul and rock adrenaline.

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Americana singer/songwriter Ryan Bingham was raised in rural Texas, where years of hardscrabble ranch work and rodeo competitions would later lend a sense of authenticity to his music. Living alone since his mid-teens, Bingham shuttled back and forth between Southwestern border towns and relatives' homes, often sleeping in his truck after rodeo shows. It was during those treks that he began entertaining friends with the guitar, an instrument he'd learned at the age of 17 from a mariachi neighbor....
