Wish Edgar Had More of the Same
Edgar Winter’s White Trash was the preeminent blues-rock band of the early 1970’s, due pretty much to this one double-album set. The band included vocalist and Sax player Jerry La Croix and Rick Derringer on guitar, plus a complete horn section for the biggest brass sound heard in rock. Nearly every song is stunning in its intensity, every song live without studio manipulation — in short the best live album ever released. It’s raw, it’s loud and it rocks. Many Edgar Winter fans point to They Only Come Out at Night as Winter’s best LP, but I think listeners would be deprived of the real Winter if they passed on Roadwork for the Top 40 hit album. “Still Alive and Well,” “Back in the U.S.A.,” and “Do Yourself a Favor” are just three of the best songs of the set; Rick Derringer proving to the world he was the top guitar slinger of the day … until they play “Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo” — “People keep askin’ me, ‘Where’s your brother?’ ” — Johnny Winter comes out and trades licks with Derringer and for five minutes, 42 seconds, you have the most outstanding guitar explosion ever recorded. Despite the heights of Johnny Winter and Rick Derringer on “Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo,” the best song is the 17-minute jam, “Tobacco Road.” This one song alone set Edgar Winter apart from every other vocalist in rock and really, along with Ten Years After’s Woodstock version of “I’m Goin’ Home,” set the standard for live rock and blues jams. To maintain that intensity for 17 minutes is extraordinary. I saw Winter and White Trash the summer after this album was released and was disappointed Johnny didn’t show up, but rocked off my feet by the 100-plus minutes of pure adrenalin coming off the stage. Since that time, I’ve always considered They Only Come Out at Night to be a lesser work in comparison. Get that Top-40 standout, certainly, but be sure to get Roadwork as well. You’ll wish he had more of the same to offer. .
First review nailed it
But I have to add that my brother had this on album, I have it on CD, and it is one of the discs that my younger friends are appreciating. It's that good. The studio album of White Trash sounds like a dead audition-they really needed the live stage environment to bring the songs to life, and this is the best.
Again, First Reviewer Nailed It!
I couldnt have said it better! I bought the LP when it came out & had to buy it again for wearing out the original. Now I have a Remastered CD. "Cool Fool" & "Do Yourself a Favor" just kill!! "Tobacco Road" is peerless & beyond compare, never to be equaled. This album, Will stand the test of time!!
