iTunes Review

Rock 'N' Soul was Solomon Burke’s second full-length release for Atlantic records and is arguably one of his best. Though 1963’s If You Need Me was packed with enduring soul classics that resonated with R&B fans and Rock and Rollers alike, its excellent tunes were often hampered by an overly mannered production style more suited to pop-soul acts like the Drifters than to Solomon Burke’s gritty Deep Soul vocalizing. Rock 'N' Soul boasts a plethora of tunes that would become Soul standards, all performed in the gritty, down home style that would serve Burke well for the remainder of his career. Rock 'N' Soul would serve as a source of limitless inspiration to British Invasion acts, who would mine it for cover material for years to come. Though The Rolling Stones version of “Cry To Me” and Them’s take on “Beautiful Brown Eyes” may be more famous than the versions presented here, they don’t begin to approach the power of the performances that Solomon Burke turns in on Rock 'N' Soul, which are inarguably definitive.

Poor Sound

Instead of buying the double LP CD If You Need Me/Rock N' Soul for ten bucks, I opted for spending twenty bucks on buying them separate on iTunes because the sound quality seemed a lot better. By and large, this seemed to be true, at least when comparing 128 kbits/sec audio samples against 30 kbits/sec samples on amazon. This wasn't my best judgment, but I didn't want to wait for this in the mail. The real problem is about halfway through "Beautiful Brown Eyes" and continuing through "He'll Have to Go." It is a very audible pop in the vinyl record or tape they took it off of. It is really annoying and I probably would have gotten better sound off the CD, not to mention save a lot of money. Anyway, this is a very good Burke album. It's a lot more laid back than If You Need Me. This is not necessarily a good or bad thing, but it certainly distinguishes it from the previous album. The best songs are Cry to Me, Hard Ain't It Hard, and Goodbye Baby. The singing and production are top notch so none of the songs are bad, but I just wish the sound were better on those last two songs. Note: If you liked "You're Good for Me," check out the Mercy/Seesaw disc by Don Covay. You can get both albums on iTunes for more than the disc costs, but i can't vouch for the mp3 sound quality on here.

Terrible Transfer

I agree with Mr. Heck, the music on this platter is great Southern soul with an eye to the teen market and a some wonderfully idiosyncratic guitar work complimenting Burke's singing, but unfortunately the poor transfer makes this almost unlistenable.

Most of the tracks sound like they were culled from a scratched CD made from a scratched record. Very unfortunate.

While Solomon Burke never made a major impact upon the pop audience — he never, in fact, had a Top 20 hit — he was an important early soul pioneer. On his '60s singles for Atlantic, he brought a country influence into R&B, with emotional phrasing and intricately constructed, melodic ballads and midtempo songs. At the same time, he was surrounded with sophisticated "uptown" arrangements and was provided with much of his material by his producers, particularly Bert Berns. The combination...
