iTunes Review

The Ramones made their deepest mark to date with Rocket to Russia, their third album (and second of 1977). Not only was the album a huge fan favorite, it managed several minor hits on the Billboard singles chart with "Sheena is a Punk Rocker," "Rockaway Beach" and a remake of the '50s classic "Do You Wanna Dance." The sound was their cleanest yet, but tracks like "Cretin Hop," "Teenage Lobotomy," and "We're a Happy Family" were hardly less aggressive or hilariously cutting. Again packing 14 songs into barely more than 30 minutes, the band was at a height of concision and imagination.

Customer Reviews

Rock to hell yeah!

The Ramones know how to do punk well and they do it well on this album. Great short songs that get you in the mood to gabba gabba hey.Highly recommended.

Masterpiece of 70's punk

Out of their first four brilliant albums, this one seems to best define what they truly represented...which was pure golden era pop sped through amps and power chords. There are some wonderful melodies...Locket Love is truly innocent and joyous while remaining hard-rocking. The opening one-two assault of Cretin Hop and Rockaway Beach remains a marvel of melody and authority that very few bands were able to reproduce but Dee Dee had down cold. Their cover of Surfin' Bird is quite possibly the greatest punk anthem ever...no big statements or declarations needed....just Joey Ramone babbling out the "papa-ooo-mow-mow" lyrics to Tommy's relentless beat and Johnny hammering the same glorious chord over and over and over and over again. This one is right up there with the Damned Damned Damned, Never Mind The Bollocks, Raw Power, and London Calling as far as definitive punk rock goes.

The Fathers of Punk!!

Every album of theirs is a masterpiece!!! These guys are not only punk rock gods but they have inspired tons of artists out there. If you don't know who the Ramones are, buy this album now!

Biography

Formed: 1974 in Queens, New York, NY

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s

The Ramones are the first punk rock band. Other bands, such as the Stooges and the New York Dolls, came before them and set the stage and aesthetic for punk, and bands that immediately followed, such as the Sex Pistols, made the latent violence of the music more explicit, but the Ramones crystallized the musical ideals of the genre. By cutting rock & roll down to its bare essentials — four chords; a simple, catchy melody; and irresistibly inane lyrics — and speeding up the tempo considerably,...
