A Concept Album Done Right
Discovering Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken was an interesting experience. At first the premise of Metal Slug with a puzzle twist while playing as a chicken fighting against a Penguin regime was laughably intriguing, so I surfed the web for information. I ended up stumbling upon the Illuminate Me music video for the game and as soon as the twistingly deep lyrics spoke I was hooked. I immediately downloaded the game and thoroughly enjoyed each minute of it. Every new level was another spectacle of the raw yet pleasing art style, a battle of wit to not only survive but to also find every secret, and admittedly listening to more and more of its captivating soundtrack. Even after completely beating the game, I would go back and leave levels on just to listen to the songs again. When I found out there was an official soundtrack released, I ecstatically purchased it hoping to a more intent listen would prove how it could be so catchy.
New World Revolution could best be described as Experimental Techno Rock (or Science Fiction Rock as they claim themselves to be), mixing elements of alternative rock with electronic beats in a jamming unison. Even then that’s cutting them short as the inspirations of varied genres weaved into the music uniquely shine in tracks, such as Stars & Snakes’ bluesy guitar and The Holy Ones’ Industrial overtones. Yet the where the music really captures you is in the ingeniously written lyrics, delving into themes of searching for hope, fighting for independence from tyranny, paranoia, struggling with faith, the human condition, and much more. It’s enlightening to hear music that tackles topics while still being rhythmic and memorable, without having to rely on talentless drivel such as pop or screamo.
Although, the combination of styles brings some weaker elements which don’t work quite as well, most notably in Listen to the Waves Singing’s Bono-equse whoohoo’s which come off as forced and out of place. Also, some of the remixes at the end of the album aren’t as nearly as powerful as their originals, such as The Gunnery’s remix of Robot which loses the addictive beat of the original, instead replacing it with bland vocalizing and a rising tune that never amounts to much. Conversely, Wolfgang Frisch’s remix of Double Agents takes the original’s head-banging rock and turns it into a raving dance beat with a bit of chiptune thrown in to really get you. Finally, the bonus extended versions of The One and Illuminate Me are arguably better than the originals (especially in The One’s case), making for nice treats to close the album.
Ultimately, the Rocketbirds: Original Soundtrack is a Concept Album done right. It captures various themes and styles into a unifying work that not only speaks with soulful lyrics, but also jams with with addictive tunes that stick in your head. As the first LP release from New World Revolution, one has to excitedly wonder what will come next for the group? Until then, I’ll leave this album forever on replay on my iPod!
