Album Review
Bill McHenry first emerged as one of the regulars at the Manhattan night spot Smalls and has gone on to become a promising player, whether the tenor saxophonist is a sideman or leading his own group. McHenry isn't one whose style or sound is easy to describe, as he is constantly experimenting. These intriguing sessions feature several of his regular collaborators, including guitarist Ben Monder, bassist Reid Anderson, and drummer Paul Motian; the music avoids predictability and even the song titles don't necessarily provide much of a hint as to the direction of the compositions. Aside from two collaborative efforts by all four musicians, the mysterious "'The Abyss Opens Up" and the tense "The City" (the latter which is dominated by Monder's menacing guitar) everything else was written by the leader. "The New One" is as close as McHenry gets to a ballad, though its loping, stop and go format is atypical. Roses is an edgy release that takes several hearings to reveal its inner beauty, so don't be intimidated by its surface complexity.

Roses
Bill McHenry is one of the best jazz artists I've had the pleasure of hearing live. I first heard him in November 2005 at the Village Vanguard during a visit to NYC. I was blown away by his rich, unique sound. His two sets, which lasted a couple hours each, went way too fast. Fortunately, I had the chance to hear him play again at the Village Vanguard when I was in New York in August 2007. This is when I heard him play the tracks from the Roses album. Every song was a gem, filled with rich melodies and improvised solos. When leaving the club, all I could think about was how sad it is that highly talented jazz artists like Bill McHenry live in relative obscurity while no-talented hacks are enjoying great fame and riches. Note to Bill -- please include Kansas City on an upcoming tour. We are not only a great jazz town, but one that truly appreciates top saxophone players, e.g., Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Charlie Parker, and Bobby Watson.
