Album Review

Recouping after a car crash and faced with the loss of Rod Stewart and Ron Wood, Jeff Beck redefined what the Jeff Beck Group was about, deciding to tone down the bluesy bombast, adding keyboardist Max Middleton for a jazz edge, then having Bob Tench sing to give it an overblown early-'70s AOR edge. As expected, these two sides are in conflict and Tench can be a little overbearing, but there are moments here that bring out the best in Beck. Namely, these are the times when the group ventures into extended, funk-inflected, reflective jazzy instrumental sections. These are the moments that point the way toward the success of Blow by Blow, yet this remains an unabashed rock record of its time, and it falls prey to many of its era's excesses, particularly lack of focus. Still, there are moments that are as fine as anything Beck played here.

Terrific album

The musicianship on this album is stellar, notwithstanding the lackluster review here on iTunes. Beck's guitar work is inspired, particularly in light of his accident. I played this album among many others for a young nephew during a night of cards. He wasn't paying attention to the hours of music, but after a couple of cuts from "Rough and Ready" he said, "Who is this?!!" Even distracted, he was blown away. You will be, too.

Beck's best rock

Rough and Ready was Jeff Beck's best rock album (Blow by Blow was his best overall, however it's genre was jazz/fusion), and one of the most distinctive yet unheralded LP's of the early 70's. The band was tight, with great keyboards and drums, as well as strong vocal performances by Bob Tench. Beck's leads and fills are not only amazing, but as tasteful as Clapton's. Even the lyrics are interesting (listen to New Ways). Overall, this is just great stuff!

The Best of Jeff Beck!

This album is consistently high quality throughout, and remarkably underrated. Jeff Beck shows in this outing that he is fully the equal of Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page, with whom he played with briefly in The Yardbirds. One wonders why this guitar talent has remained undervalued?! Beck finds funk and lyric beauty in equal measure with this band.
