Album Review

Though best known for his gripping horror film scores, Christopher Young proves his remarkable flair for jazz with his work on the 1998 poker-themed cult favorite Rounders. Employing virtuoso Hammond organist Mike Lang and a cadre of ace session musicians, Young skillfully evokes the heyday of Blue Note Records with a lively, soulful set that's as funky as anything to come out of Hollywood since the demise of the blaxploitation era. Young's deep-groove melodies consciously channel the spirit of vintage Jimmy Smith and Brother Jack McDuff LPs, capturing their late-night, nicotine-stained ambience in vivid detail.
