Album Review
The Toadies' debut album is a streamlined version of the Pixies' warped guitar rock and Nirvana's throttling grunge. It results in some good moments, particularly the single "Possum Kingdom."

Underrated and unusual
Mixing nice riffs and odd time signatures, this album was a distinctive entry to the mid-nineties alternative hard-rock scene. The songs still hold up, not least thanks to harrowing lyrics describing a youth fraught by the scars of forced religion and illicit love. Standouts include "Backslider" and "Possum Kingdom," though there are no real duds here. Disturbing and darkly rocking, Toadies stood out but never really hit the big time.
Still listen to it 10 years after
I never understood why this band never really "took off" and became "the next big thing" after this album...the band pulled in some heavyweights for this album. The album was recorded and produced by Tom Rothrock and Rob Schnapt (Beck, Wool), and mixed by Andy Wallace, who worked on Nirvana's Nevermind and Helmet's Meantime. i still listen to the album today and i love every song on it. When i play the album for my non-texas friends, they immediately buy it! It's definitely worth the money and rocks from beginning to end!
Great Band That No One Listens To
Todd Lewis and crew went to my high school in Fort Worth, TX, and I couldn't be prouder. This band put together incredible musicthat really thrived in live show too. It is just too bad that like The Pixies, The Toadies are no more.
