iTunes Review

A child prodigy on mandolin and banjo, Sarah Jarosz also plays guitar and several other instruments on Follow Me Down, and wrote nine of its 11 tracks. Her uncommon talent attracted many high-profile guests for this recording including Bela Fleck, Victor Krauss, Jerry Douglas, Darrell Scott, and Chris Thile, plus harmony vocals from Vince Gill, Shawn Colvin, and Dan Tyminski, who complement Jarosz’s own sweet, sultry voice. As you’d expect, the musicianship is remarkable, and the players sound inspired by her rich songs. Her own “Annabelle Lee,” for instance, sounds like a century-old Appalachian ballad while her sublime cover of Radiohead’s “The Tourist” is thoroughly modern in mood and execution, as are “Come Around,” “My Muse,” and “Here Nor There.” Two textured instrumentals demonstrate her range and feel: the mandolin and fiddle showstopper “Old Smitty” and the ethereal and touching “Peace,” which closes the album with waves of intertwining mandolin, cello, fiddle, and wood flute. Follow Me Down is a gorgeous and accomplished album that delights more with each listen.

I'd Follow Sarah Anywhere

After Sarah's freshen release, "Song Up In Her Head", her sophomore has been long awaited. "Follow Me Down" leaves nothing to be desired. This album has everything from the old-time flair of "Annabelle Lee" to a Radiohead cover featuring The Punch Brothers. Her abundance of musical talent is matched only by her lyrical sensibility.

Synergy at it's best!

I must admit, I have an extreme bias for Sarah having watched her from afar in the past and a little closer more recently, and to witness her progression has been inspiring not only for me, but many aspiring and indeed, accomplished, mandolin pickers. Of course, that's not the only instrument she plays, making it all the more bittersweet, at least in my case. But a sophomore effort by an actual sophomore, how often does THAT happen?

Sarah continues to outshine her peers and impress the jaded like myself in ways not easily described. She pulls from a deep well musically and lyrically that bores directly to the deepest parts of one's psyche not easily reached.

I love to cook, and the one thing I took away from my teachers is that the best food comes from the best ingredients. Of course, you can never underestimate this concept in making a record and this record is no exception to that rule. The best records always come out of the synergy created from putting the best musicians and engineers together and just letting them do their thing. You really can't say too much about the synergy created from this cast, especially between Sarah and engineer Gary Paczosa, who together continue to impress and raise the bar.

Get this record!!!!

You've gotta get this album. It's rock solid from start to finish; a totally fresh record. Been listenin' to the instrumentals over and over. The musicians on this record are killer.

Biography

Born: May 23, 1991 in Austin, TX

Genre: Singer/Songwriter

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist (mandolin, clawhammer banjo, and guitar) Sarah Jarosz was seemingly born a musician — she was already a virtuoso on mandolin by the time she was ten. Born in Austin, Texas on May 23, 1991, Jarosz left no doubt where her future was going, and at 12 years old she was jamming with the likes of David Grisman and Ricky Skaggs on-stage. But she wasn’t really bluegrass so much as she was something else again, a fine and graceful songwriter with a sweet,...
