Album Review
RuPaul is always willing to smile for the camera, which doesn't allow him the lofty reputation gay disco legend Sylvester was graced with. Being campy doesn't get you much respect either, but the triumphant allegiance to gay dance music on Red Hot should, while the softer numbers round the album nicely. "Looking Good, Feeling Gorgeous" attempts to recapture "Supermodel"'s excitement, almost does, and ends up being no embarrassment. Luckily, nothing else on the album tries to recreate the signature tune. Instead, Red Hot relies on dramatic ballads and empowering dancefloor anthems that recall the glory days of disco. "Love Is Love" finds the singer able to write a "no matter how different we are, we're all the same" number with heart and conviction. "Are You Man Enough" isn't as sleazy as it sounds — questioning the listener's confidence rather than just their prowess — and the cover of Depeche Mode's "People Are People" is everything a dancefloor could hope for. While subduing the lighthearted camp and turning up the drama makes Red Hot a "not for everyone" album, the deepness of it pushes RuPaul's musical legacy more toward Sylvester's than Divine's, and that's progress.

Twerk This!
When the gay community had nothing but a bi-sexual Elton John (his official stance at the time) & BAD drag on Jerry Springer; RuPaul (In 6 inch heels & a wig styled to the heavens) busted the roof off of the pop world with a message of "Everybody say LOVE!" Years later she returns with Red Hot, her 4th studio album, and still she doesn’t disappoint. Danceable but deep with maturity and self confidence, Red Hot brings back the fun of dance music without all the 'trance' crap thrown in for main stream appeal. The entire album is worth checking out. Personal favorites: The Price of One, Kinky/Freaky, Hollywood USA just to name a few. My favorite by far is Superman. Not only an anthem for those of US who have struggled with acceptance for our sexuality but, for anyone who wants to simply be who they are and not conform to the standard of others. The chorus says it all: "right or wrong - accept me as i am not at all - or do the best that ‘cha can right or wrong - accept me as i am after all, i’m not your superman” As we all grow up, so has Ru, she shows some added versatility by dipping into hip-hop and even a taste of Rap. Is there any thing Ms. Thing can’t do? Ru said it best on the first single Looking Good, Feeling Gorgeous; "YES I'm back baby, back to let you have it!"
Kinky, Freaky and Funky!
RuPaul is back with a vengeance! Her new CD is a stunning achievement of funk, sass, self revelation, dance grooves, political statement, hip-hop and humor. No question that this is her best album to date. Every track is groovilicious! RuPaul is in new territory exploring rap and hop-hop on a few tracks. You'll be as surprised with the change in style as with how effective the songs are. But if you can tear your attention away from the beats you will find many interesting lyrics. "Don't give a d**n what people think of me, I am what I am." "I was near surrender, trapped in secret pride. Worried that you needed more than what I had inside." When RuPaul chants "love somebody - today!" at the end of "Love Is Love" it's as if she's challenging us, demanding us to live up to the task. For me it's one of the most moving moments on the album. But Ru hasn't lost an iota of her humor. This is one of the funniest CDs you'll ever hear. If you're familiar with how Janet Jackson puts short interludes between some of her tracks, you'll appreciate how much more effectively RuPaul uses them on Red Hot. I can't listen to this CD without busting out with laughter a few times. The confrontation rap on "Kinky/Freaky" has to heard to be believed! Red Hot lives up to it's name and can easily be dubbed the most fun album of the year.
Rupaul grows up
It's been a long time since we strutted our selves to Supermodel and Ru comes back proving he wasn't just a flash in the pan. The new stuff is more mature and more slick. Looking Good, Feeling Gorgeous is just about as fun as you can have with the superstar drag queen. Coming Out of Hiding is a funky, uplifting dance treasure. Are you Man Enough has the beat of a Beyonce song with a Ru Attitude thrown in. Give It One More Try is a perfect pop song. And Hollywood USA has a hook that won't let you go. And welcome Shirley Q. Liquor, the genius behind the comedy track, Pre-Flight Checklist. Way to go, Ru!
