iTunes Review

Sober and focused, Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine regrouped with a new line-up to reclaim his status as one of heavy metal’s leading innovators. New addition ex-Cacophony guitarist Marty Friedman adds a ferocious, competitive edge to this already challenging group. Riffs fly into extreme solos and rhythms triple in their intensity until it feels like the group’s efforts to exceed the speed of sound will prevail. Arguably their finest album (some prefer the raw punkish firepower of Peace Sells…But Who’s Buying), Rust In Peace is a heavy metal primer on how to balance aggression and virtuosity without losing the grip on the song at hand. “Holy Wars…The Punishment Due” sets things off with a rhythmic juggernaut that sounds like a helicopter leaving the ground before finally slowing to a sniper’s crawl for Mustaine to trade vocals lines with guitars that threaten to take control and eventually do with one of the genre’s most captivating solos. “Hangar 18” improves on this. And so it goes, as Rust in Peace at times feels less like an album than a game of “Top This” — to which these dedicated musos give their all.

Awesome

Megadeth threw the gauntlet down for this one, the musicianship is incredible. The remaster is even better, Mustaine could easily make a good living as a producer for the quality of this record. The original recordings lacked any balance, the drums sounded tinny, the bass was almost non exsistent, the vocal was thin and guitar sounded like it was in a closet. Now, there's depth and clarity. If there was a 100 star rating, this one would have it. And all you have to do is listen to the album to hear why.

Amazing
