Ace Hood - Ruthless

Being called one of the best new artists signed to a record deal, Ace Hood had a lot to live up to. His freshman album, Gutta, failed to sell over 100k. It pretty much flopped. Now with his sophmore album, Ruthless, coming out just under a year from his previous attempt, will he be able to show why he's one of the best youngn's out their and exceed the sell numbers of his previous album? Well we'll find out next week about how it sold, but let's see how his songs stacked up. 1. Get Money: The first thing I noticed about this album is that there are no tracks under three minutes long, which is a great thing to see. No skits. This is an interesting way to start off an album just because it's about money. I would expect a song that discussed his previous album and how his life's been going on thus far. Maybe even discuss why this album is better than the previous one. But none the less, this track is a solid banger with Rick Ross and Ace sharing the hook and Ross putting down a great guest verse. This is a fantastic way to start off the album. 4.5/5 2. Loco Wit The Cake: This is the second single off the album and one of my favorites from him and one of the best on the album. He attacks the track coming with a solid flow and spittin lines without effort. The production is also top notch and there is nothing wrong with this track. The hook by Schife sounds good, then comes Ace Hood with just this power in his voice. Awesome song and I can easily see why this was chosen as one of the singles. 5/5 3. Born An OG: This track wasn't one of the singles and I can see why. The track is the best off the album and since it's not a single, it may draw people into buying his album. Ludacris attacks the track with a fantastic verse and he definitely owns the track but not by much. I thought Luda would destory Ace, but that wasn't the case. Ace Hood comes harder then ever and shows us that he can rap with one of the elites of the genre. This is definitely my favorite track on the album and I'll have this on repeat for quite some time. 5/5 4. Overtime: The first single off the album and it's not hard to tell why. This has commercial play all over it while still attracting hardcore fans. The reason I say this is because while the song features Akon and T-Pain, Ace still goes hard and spits some hot lines. It was interesting to see Akon and T-Pain on the same track but that turned out to be a good thing. Hot song. 5/5 5. Champion: This is interesting, Ace is putting all his singles on the beginning of the album. This is the third single off the album and my second favorite on the album at that. His lyrics and rhymes sound great one this one and the hook supplied by Jazmine Sullivan just sounds refreshing and pure. Rick Ross also comes with a great guest verse and the production doesn't falter. 5/5 6. Love Somebody: Alright, now for the unheard portion of the album. This is obviously a song for the ladies and I normally don't like those types of tracks. But this one I can actually listen to. Jeremih supplies a great hook and Ace softens up his voice a little bit, but not much. That's why I like this track, Ace still attacks it with his powerful voice. Production is great once again. 4/5 7. Don't Get Caught Slippin': The production on this one is great, but he's already said this type of stuff on the album. I know I said I wasn't going to discuss lyrics, but come on. The hook sounds good, but his verses just sound weak. Decent track at best. 3/5 8. This Ni**a Here: This is actually a great track, but the Birdman feature wasn't really necessary. Ace just totally outshines him on the track as his verses go hard yet again. This is another song with a catchy hook and good production. 4/5 9. Mine: The-Dream feature on this one worried me, but it wasn't the disaster I envisioned. The production sounds off here though and even Ace sounds forced to spit lines at a different tempo. The-Dream feature also doesn't do the track any justice and this was just a really weak song with off production. 2.5/5 10. Wifey Material: Oh come on, please don't do this to me. This is another one for the ladies and I can't accept this one. I mean, he already basically said the same stuff on Love Somebody and I just don't need another love track with another R&B feature. The production is at least sound on this one though. 3/5. 11. Bout Me: The beat on this one sounds great and although these lyrics have been said before, I enjoyed the track. Ace provides a great hook and verses while Ballgreezy sounds okay. I just don't know who that person is. This track is definitely better then the precessors. 3.5/5 12. Zone: The lyrics on this one make me question if Ace will ever be able to become a great lyricist. Any song where someone rhymes a word with Peter Pan is definitely an interesting choice. The production sounds great though and other than that line, the track is very enjoyable. 3.5/5 13. Make A Toast: I know this track has been put on albums over and over again, but it's nice to hear some meaningful lyrics from Ace. This is definitely a good way to end the album and wrap up Ruthless. 4/5 All in all, Ruthless was definitely better than its precessor, but the organization of the tracks was off to me. I think that it would've been better off if the singles were more spread out throughout the album, but instead the five best tracks were the first five. He didn't show any great lyrical growth (where's The Cypher type stuff?), but he showed that he's unique and that he defnitely can flow. There were some questionable tracks and maybe one or two that I wouldn't bother listening to, but other than that the album was good. The production only faltered once and I'm glad the album was trimmed down. Ace is only 21 and he's beginning to come into his own. I'm hoping that by the time his next album comes around, he will have evolved into somewhat of a great lyricist. I guess we'll have to wait and see. Overall Score: 4/5 (80 percent)
