Album Review
Geggy Tah may be eclectic, drawing from all sorts of collegiate rock, but they have a hard time focusing their talents on their second album, Sacred Cow. Careening between jangly pop, tame punk, reconstituted prog-rock and funk, the band covers a lot of ground without coming up with a distinctive sound. Furthermore, the group is undone by their weakness for cutesy, sophomoric jokes — their very attitude makes it seem like they're being condescending to their own music. But the best moments on Sacred Cow — despite their flaws, the band does have musical skill — suggest that if the band can focus themselves, they'll produce an engaging album.
Customer Reviews
Great, largely unheralded 90s indie rock with a twist
I saw these guys in Dallas back in '96 when they were touring for this record with Soul Coughing. As superb as Soul Coughing was, these guys pretty much stole the show. Part of my love for these songs comes from my memories of that show (the title track, Sacred Cow, was *insane* live), but they are great, off-kilter pop/rock songs nonetheless. I'd suggest checking out the whole album and not just "Whoever You Are". These guys are clever, funny, and have some serious chops to back it all up. I miss Geggy Tah!
One of my favorite CDs of all time...
I heard "Whoever You Are" in a commercial, and bought the CD for the song (this was before the age of downloading singles). It turns out that the rest of the CD is one of the greatest sleeper CDs ever. Amazing. Their next CD "Into the Oh" is very solid too...
Thanks,you made me buy a Mercedes-Benz
"Whoever You Are"was used in a Mercedes-Benz commercial for their then new C230 coupe in 2002.The song and advert was so good i went out and bought the car.I love this song, great beat and forever catchy. As for the car,i traded that unreliable piece for a Scion.Im sure some gangster wannabe has put dubs on it by now.
