iTunes Review

Best known for his work in the classic 1972 film The Harder They Come and its soundtrack, Jimmy Cliff is one of reggae's most enduring superstars. He has released more than 25 albums since his 1968 debut (Hard Road to Travel), has collaborated with a wide array of artists from multiple genres, was awarded Jamaica's prestigious Order of Merit, and in 2010 was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Still actively recording and touring the world, he connects here with producer Tim Armstrong (of the group Rancid) for Sacred Fire, an exceptionally upbeat EP that overflows with good vibes, breezy vocals, and quality musicianship. He gives us his takes on The Clash's "Guns of Brixton" (both a vocal version and dub reinterpretation) and Dylan's "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall," as well as breathing new life into the Rancid track "Ruby Soho." For the one original track, "Ship Is Sailing," he sounds like he did 30-some years ago, flaunting the beautiful voice that helped make reggae a worldwide phenomenon.

It's one of the music industry's great ironies that today, outside of reggae circles, Jimmy Cliff is perhaps better known for his film appearances than his music. Even after a string of hits, the singer never quite managed to break into the mainstream, although he seemed poised for international stardom during the late '60s/early '70s. The singer was born in St. Catherine, Jamaica, on April 1, 1948, with the less prosaic name James Chambers. His talent was evident from childhood, and he began his...
