SACRIFICE IS THE TRUTH
Sacrifice is a breath of fresh air as Substantial brings both an unmatched and uncanny flow and delivery that rides this project's dope dope dope production. Don't sleep. The production is great. Jazzy and still bumps hard, Stan showed that he's really on top of his game. Aside from the ridiculous rhyming abilities, lyrically the dude is 'that damn good'. Sacrifice is versatile and the QN5 camp continues to deliver CDs that accommodate tracks ranging from all different fields. Stan delivers braggadocia, socially conscious, and personal tracks ranging from love, to day jobs, to people lifting themselves from the obstacle life gives us, all reminding us of the sacrifices we make/or have to make in life. Stan joins his Efamm crew as well for another creative track with "Sign Language". Highly reccommend this album. The man is too nice.
DO NOT SLEEP ON SUBSTANTIAL
This album is real hip hop. it has great beats and phenomenal, intellegent lyrics. it is hot, and Stan proves again he is worthy of the QN5 record label
A Well Manicured American Debut From A Gifted New Voice...
Listening to Sacrifice, the second album in 7 years by Extended Famm member Substantial is to like listening to a purring engine on a freshly tuned mustang dressed in a fresh coat of wax. Substanial reps Maryland hard while covering all the bases you would expect from a great hip hop album while still managing to push the boundaries with unique topics and perspectives. Songs like "Sign Language" and "Let It Go" are extraordinarily well written and delivered with pinpoint precision on the mic. Substantial seems to be able to flip flaces in a flash - from fun-loving to philosophical to ferocious. Song to song, he basically runs the gamut of "feels" to display a level of comfort and confidence in the vocal booth that some battered Hip Hop vets have yet to achieve. Sacrifice is Substantial's olive branch to American audiences who are as ignorance-obsessed as ever, yet still deemed worth enough to be given a second chance by a forgiving soul. Substantial seems to care about those who are listening and this sentiment shines through in much of the album. From "QT", an ode to his girlfriend who he never spends enough time with, to the declaratory "Hood Hope". With lyrics like "Look what I've done with the little I've worked with, far from perfect, but the struggle was all worth it," it's easy to see what this artists is trying to accomplish. Upon first listen, many people might overlook this album as another foray into standard "neo-soul/jazz/boom-bap, but they clearly haven't delved into the lush undercarriage of the production. Scores of original instrumentation, from violin, to acoustic piano, to bluesy electric guitar, to buzzing synths to the sultry soul vocal stylings of guest-vocalist, Steph - this record is marvelously produced from top to bottom. This is quite simply put - an excellent Hip Hop album that stands up lyrically, conceptually and musically to the this listener's jaded ear. This is a definite must have for 2008 and an excllent way to kick off the year.
