iTunes Review

Detroit horrorcore pioneer Esham is about as far from the public’s idea of a “conscious rapper” as anyone can be, yet his 15th solo album, Sacrificial Lambz, finds the veteran imparting wisdom and knowledge with all the conviction of a Mos Def or a Common. “Levies Broke” is a poignant seminar on the downfall of Detroit, while “Substance Abuse” is heart-wrenching portrayal of depression and addiction. Passion has always been present in Esham’s work, but as he ages his compassion has grown. It’s hard to believe that the man best known for his outlandish and kaleidoscopic horror raps is now making songs as concise and emotionally determined as “Get Me Down.” Sacrificial Lambz touches on every point in the sonic spectrum from the spare rock guitar of “6 Million” to the Middle Eastern orchestration of “Sacrificial Lambz”; from the Auto-Tuned pop hook of “Better Than the Best” to the spooky aggression of “Angels & Demons”; and from the primitive electro of “Ringtone” to “Unholy Knights,” which samples a choral rendition of “Silent Night.” Surely one of the most audacious and inspiring hip-hop albums of 2008.

BETTER THAN EVER

This is a really good Esham CD, It's got all aspects of his style, 28 tracks, and the production and lyrics are on point. He never fails to bring the dopest wicked sh*t, I would recommend this CD.

Real Detroit Rap

Esham has been doing it like nobody else for years now. For those of us who appreciate his originality and his unwillingness to compromise his style, this album will not disappoint. It's like all the best moments from Dead Flowers, Tongues, and Repentance were rolled into one truly dope and original cd. If you've been keeping up with all the video promo songs Esham has been making and putting up on acidrap.com and youtube.com you already have a good idea of what to expect this time around. If you didn't get it already, go get it, because all those songs are on it and if you like them, you'll love the rest of the album. Way to go Esham. You truly made a classic album yet again. I personally think this is Esham's best to date. Ha. I think that every time he's ever put put a new album, I think that one's the best yet, until the next new one! Keep making good albums and keep being yourself Esham, because the true fans will appreciate this album even more than the last one.

Esham is wild!

and that's a good thing.

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

As an underappreciated cult artist, Esham's harsh hardcore rap thrived in this hometown of Detroit, MI, for years before an ensemble of artists with a similar style began crossing over into the mainstream in the late '90s. Long before rock acts such as Limp Bizkit began rapping, long before rappers such as Kid Rock began rocking, Esham was integrating a rock influence into his rap in the early '90s, crafting a unique style of self-declared "acid rap." In fact, this term is rather fitting, given Esham's...
