Album Review

After upping the energy on his second record, 2008's Golden Delicious, to a mixed response from fans and reviewers, on Sad Man Happy Man Mike Doughty returns to acoustic folk; to the pared-down version of his '90s band Soul Coughing's funk-infused, downtown jazz-embracing indie rock that made his solo debut such a delight. Half Brooklyn hipster aging delightfully gracelessly, half pre-electric Dylan, Doughty muses over lost loves and lusts, throws in odd references, abstract couplets that, defying logic, retain meaning, and crafts bohemian characters past, present, and future. Since his days fronting the 120 Minutes-feted band, Doughty's been the master of his own brand of half-Beat mantra half-rap, and he doesn't take long to return to the repetition well. By the second track, "(I Keep On) Rising Up," he's skipping lyrical grooves, and on the next track, "(You Should Be) Doubly (Gratified)," he's practically in his usual scat trance; it's predictable, but oh so comfortable, and his prose poetry loses no substance during all the verbal substance. He continues to switch tacks effortlessly, dropping a straightforward Ani DiFranco-esque modern folk ballad on "(I Want To) Burn (You Down)," before returning to the underground hip-hop off-beat vigor of "Pleasure on Credit." Doughty closes (fittingly) on a reverent cover of Daniel Johnston's "Caspar the Friendly Ghost," a sweetly off-kilter product of another merrily fevered mind. While Sad Man Happy Man is nothing particularly new, it's a thoroughly fun and gleefully disorienting effort from one of the alternative era's truly unique pop artists.

Lord Lord Help You to Rock Rock On

Yep, it's all familiar - familiar riffs, stripped down ripped down vocals, and great lyrics. Another darn good album. It all works for me, and I am personally glad he isn't joined by tribal back up rhythms, celebrity guest vocals or forays into musical avant garde. On this album, Mike sticks with what organically comes best to him and this fan in grateful.

Was hoping to hear about the 28th Jennifer

But this is still good

As Always

I'm one of those lyrics people. You know, the kind that hates even a catchy or fun song, if the lyrics are stupid enough. I know people who can't even hear the words, and they can abide all sorts of inane lyrics. I can't.
That's why I love Doughty so much. I know that he is a citizen of the same world we live in by his lyrics. Even at their most stripped down, or goofy, or imperfect, they reek of real, honest to god human being. That's more than I can say for a lot of musicians. I can smell a phony a mile away, and I hate to hear catchy just for the sake of catchy. He writes (if not for stunning visual imagery), at least for the tactile sensation of words and phrases. They stick in your head (moreso than they are catchy) where they tumble around, get shined up and spat out as your own, like when you read a good book and the characters become your friends. Listen to "Wednesday" from Golden Delicious, and tell me just any artist could open their chest and lay out their heart like that. I won't believe you.

Before emerging as a solo artist, Mike Doughty (known as M. Doughty during the early stages of his career) was best known as the frontman of the unique avant-garde group Soul Coughing. Formed in 1992, Soul Coughing took shape after Doughty met Yuval Gabay, Sebastian Steinberg, and Mark de Gli Antoni while working as a doorman at the Knitting Factory, a staple of New York City's underground music scene. The four musicians signed with Slash/Warner Bros. in 1993 after making a name for themselves on...
