Sahara Hotnights' best sounding album yet
On their latest, self-titled album, Sahara Hotnights have their most mature sound. Lead singer Maria Andersson relies more heavily on her bandmates for backing vocals and they display some tricks that they haven't pulled out yet, especially on songs like Let You Down and Vulture Feet. Andersson also has figured out for the first time how to write engaging slow songs. The band is always at their best when playing up tempo mixes of pop and punk, but the slower songs, which have broken up the flow on previous albums, now seem appropriate. It's hard to believe that Hotnights have released 6 full length albums (5 with all original songs) before any bandmember has turned 30 years old, but they've done it. The best songs are Let You Down, Vulture Feet and Your Anyone, but the whole thing is outstanding.
First US Release since 2004
Sahara Hotnights haven't released an album in the US since 2004's Kiss & Tell. Their last two records were only available as imports. Since that time they've grow away from their pop/punk origins and shifted to a more slick pop sound. This album continues that trend. The band still sounds great if you're willing to go along for the ride and the songs certainly show a maturity in songwriting. The production is sleek and crisp and Maria's voice sounds great as always. As much as I enjoy and support the band in their continued progression, I can't help but think how some of these songs would've sounded sped up with a bit of that old punk swagger.
