THE BEACH BOYS ARE NOT BETTER THAN THE BEATLES!!!!! They have some good stuff, but they DEFINITELY are NOT better than the Beatles!!!! What is my generation coming to?????? First people say that the Jonas Brothers are being compared to the Beatles (GGGRRRRR!!!!!!), THEN somebody goes off and says the Beach Boys are better than the Beatles. What is happening???

Quite a marvelous collection

While I would not necessarily classify this album as a collection of greatest hits, certainly each and every one of the songs present is, well, great. Chiefly, this album highlights the genius of Brian Wilson. While some make the argument that The Beach Boys were really Brian Wilson + other musicians, 1967-onward has proved otherwise. Fantastic songs (though not hits) such as Dennis's "Little Bird", Carl's "The Trader, " and/or Bruce J.'s "Deirdre" all qualify as stellar Beach Boys material.

With that said, Brian was certainly the creative force of the band, and when he was put some real effort into his compositions, few other composers could match him (this includes Lennon and McCartney). While the first nine songs of this collection are fairly well known, the latter half of the album is where the real beauty of this album and The Beach Boys lies. Absolute musical gems such as the haunting "Surf's Up" or the vocally stunning "This Whole Word" can make instant converts of Beach Boys naysayers. Indeed, this is a great collection of tunes to reverse the "summer 'n' fun" stigma that plagues The Beach Boys' name to this day (partially due to Mike Love). I digress-- overall, the collection of songs is absolutely stunning and should just serve as a beginning to a Beach Boys collection. In particular, Sunflower is a wonderful album to purchase.

The four stars are because of the slightly hot mastering of this CD. It's a little loud and bright. The stereo mix of "Heroes and Villains" is great as is "California Girls", but overall the sound on the collection could use a little work. If I may recommend, the originally-issued 1990 "two-fers" of the official Beach Boys catalog are great. For post-Sunflower, go with the official releases.

excellent
