This is really a tremendous recording, one I've come back to again and again with increasing satisfaction. Not only is the Nash Ensemble's playing both technically excellent and full of rich feeling (neither is sacrificed for the other, happily), the quality of recording is consistent and more than satisfactory. I used the piano quartet from this recording as the pre-show soundtrack for a large scale production of one of Chekhov's plays, and the sound quality holds up well even on the sound system of a full theater. The music itself is extraordinary. They are some of Saint-Saens' best - the early pieces are shockingly sophisticated, and the later ones satisfyingly complex. I count this album as one of the centerpieces of my music collection.
