Thibaudet is wonderful!
If you haven't heard this pianist you should. Thibaudet is really, really great. Montreal sounds very good too in this recording.
impressive élan and sensitivity
Thibaudet's technique remains unimpeachable; this music is running through his bloodstream. Also, his musicality is as pleasant as ever: generous, yet not effusive; charming, but without being coy. Both concertos have strong, intuitive performative arcs (which I guess is to be expected). But, in addition, there is something tremendously uplifting about them-- something that one doesn't find very often, and that is a real treat. Concerto No. 2 is especially good; if I had to compare it, I would say it is as intelligent and musing as Cecile Licad's great SS No. 2-- with the benefit of being more fun. The scherzando captures the essence of Saint Saens and his playfulness for me, and really won me over. The orchestra is stunning. I'm less familiar with a broad sample of recordings of No. 5, but it compares favorably to recordings I own by Collard and Rogé. The "horizontal" motion of piano and orchestra is especially compelling in the first movement. And I was very taken by the élan Thibadet wove throughout the solo passages. If Nancy Wilson were a classical pianist, I think she would sound a little like this maybe. Great disc.
Justice to Saint-Saëns
An impeccable version of this piece. Thibaudet certainly lives up to his title as the "French Master".
