iTunes Review
John Hiatt’s been cranking out songs for over thirty years, having spent the last twenty fitting in as a slightly off-kilter country-folk traditionalist. He never settles into a strict genre, and while 2008’s Same Old Man, recorded and mixed by Hiatt himself, highlights the acoustic guitar stylings of North Mississippi All-Star Luther Dickinson (on National Resonator slide guitar and mandolin), it still features plenty of prickly Hiatt lyrical concerns and that weathered threadbare wire of a voice. Hiatt balances between keeping his tongue in cheek (for the to hell-with-nostalgia of “Old Days”) and sticking it out for all the world to see (“Same Old Man” admits his failings without flnching). He’s a songwriter torn between writing what he hears as a universal love song able to be covered by anyone (“What Love Can Do” with daughter Lilly on harmony) and those other peculiar tunes littered with details that only Hiatt could pull off. (It’s his preferred Chinese food menu featured on “Our Time“.) Just as he seems to be settling into a predictable groove, he stretches his range to wring an extra dose of emotion, as the title track and “Let’s Give This Love A Try” end things with a strong finish.
Customer Reviews
Same Old John Hiatt!
My wife and I recently saw Hiatt perform with his acoustic alongside Lyle Lovett. What a great night of tunes, that was. The man can really play his guitar and has more soul than most songwriters. He is still writing meaningful lyrics, terrific hooks (for those who don't know, check out his "Master of Disaster" for one fine example). I didn't think it was possible, but his voice has not only matured, but the gravel that is stuck in his larynx simply instills more heartache into each note he seems to strain for... but it's still musical and worth listening too. As I've grown older listening to John Hiatt, his lyrics seem to speak to me at every stage of my life. This new album is no exception. Great stories. Great singable hooks - Nice ballads.... What Love Can Do? Really nice. Old Days? Classic John Hiatt. Great stuff. Support great songwriting. Buy this recording!
High on Hiatt
No one writes lyrics like John Hiatt. He creates incredible moments in few words then hits the slam dunk with his soulful earthy voice. I've been waiting patiently for every new album - or song - or compilation - and Same Old Man has been worth the wait. The only way I would say he is the Same Old Man is in the way he produces great album after album - but every one is unique and heartfelt in only the Hiatt way. Thanks, John - over twenty years of listening - but we're not the same old men...
"Same Old Man"
"Same Old Man" is an extraodinary John Hiatt recording that brings to mind the intense focus and honesty of the trilogy: "Bring The Family," "Slow Turning," and "Stolen Moments." Hiatt has had many, many projects since that phase and many great songs. But his recordings often lacked consistency. Even in the best projects, a song or two would either be out of place or just not worthy. I must say I am quite surprised and pleased to hear "Same Old Man." It is outstanding.
